Muggins, thank you so much for this link.

I didn't expect to find anything because my Johnstons, Wisharts, Richardsons etc all came from the north of Scotland, but my grandmother was born in Dumfries in 1896.

I clicked on the Valuation Roll for Dumfries and found my great-grandfather very easily on page 3 living exactly where I thought they should be!

My grandmother was born in 1896 in Crichton Cottages, Bankend Road, Dumfries, and there is my grandfather:

Bankend Road (owned by Crichton Institution, trustees and directors of) Robert Johnston, Fitter (on my grandmother's birth certificate he is an engine fitter - he went on to work as a Telephone Inspector for the Glasgow trams. He was an electrician by trade).

My great-grandmother had worked as a nurse at Chrichton Institution before she married.
