UK Naval medals
Do you get a citation, or just the fact?
I've just found Adams Edwards in the list, and the ship is the Amethyst, which means he must have been involved in the capture of a foreign ship during the Napoleonic Wars. (I knew his ship was, but some of the men were guarding prisoners, so not involved) Could someone just have a peek for me, please? |

It says the Amethyst engaged the Niemen on 5th April 1809 and the Niemen was taken. The Captain was Captain Seymour and the officer promoted was Lieut. Hill. Adams Edwards was a Mid (presumably = Midshipman), and was not absent on the day of the battle, and not marked R (i.e. not a deserter). Claim verified by ship's books - yes. Reference to application 7/953.

Ooh, thank you, Kite!
I've read up the ship's logs (which downplay the whole proceedings) but I've always wondered if he actually took part. Michael Seymour was a dashing and glamorous captain and I think the family followed his career with pride long after Adams went onto half-pay. |
