New information: found Elizabeth's baptism: between 6-8 Jun 1831 [image is faint] at St. Giles in the Fields. Elizabeth Alice Goodwin, born 18 Sep 1829, daughter of John Goodwin, wine porter, & Elizabeth, of 8 Monmouth Street Married Dennis McCarthy (known after 1866 as James Carter) 19 June 1848 Trinity Church, St. Andrew Holborn Elizabeth's address on her marriage cert was 12 Saffron Street, Saffron Hill 1851 McCarthy family (Dennis calling himself James) are in Clerkenwell with children Emily Alice & William HO7/1516/564 p.20 1861 McCarthy family at 5 Wellington Place, Southwark family still there in 1866 (source: son's birth cert) 1871 family now using Carter surname 5 St Vincent Street, Mile End Old Town children William, Eliza, James, Mary A., Charles, Henry, Alfred 1881 16 Yattan Street, Poplar with children Richard (who was blind), Henry, Charles & Edward also a lodger, Charles Goodwin, whose surname is the same as Elizabeth's maiden name, and who states his birthplace, like her's as Long Acre. Charles' parents were John Goodwin, a carpenter, and Frances. I haven't yet worked out the connection with Elizabeth. 1891 46 Poole Street, Hoxton, Shoreditch with son Edward W. 1901 23 Bridgewater Street, St. Pancras still called Carter. Their blind son Richard and his wife Emma, who was also blind, are in the next household, using McCarthy surname. 1907 Jan-Mar Elizabeth's husband's death registered in West Ham as Dennis James McCarthy. 1911 134 Monega Road, Forest Gate London E. Alfred Layton head 57 Stovidon Norfolk Parish NK Mary Ann Layton wife 51 married 22 years caretaker at St Edmunds Church, b.Blackfryers [sic] Road, London Edward Bertie Layton son 15 customs clerk Hoxton Ivy Philliss Layton daur 13 school Poplar Richard Percy Alfred Layton son 11 school Forest Gate, Essex >>Elizabeth Alice McCarthy mother widow 82 Holborn London 29 Jun 1911, Elizabeth McCarthy aged 82, widow of Dennis McCarthy, a wine cooper (journeyman), cause of death: ischio-rectal abscess, exhaustion, cardiac syncope, certified by S.R.
