Umbollah? Where is/was it?
I have just started helping my sister-in-law with her family history and, according to the 1891 census her Great Grandfather was born in Umbollah, East India. Does anyone know where this is or was please?
His details are: William Charles Howell born c1888. I think I have found his death in 1915 in Ewell. I haven't been able to find him in 1901, his wife Mary & family are still in West Street and his wife is listed as head, and married. In 1891 he was living in West Street, Ewell, Surrey with Mary and his family. In 1881 he was living in Carshalton with wife Mary and son Charles E (5) who was born in East Indies, Mhow?. I can't find a marriage for Mary & William, but on 1911 census Mary states she has been married for 30 years, so possibly she is not Charles' birth mother. I haven't been able to find either William or Mary prior to 1881. In 1891 Charles E is listed as 'inmate' at Mayford Industrial School in Woking and by 1901 he is married and living in Cheam, Surrey with his wife & children. Anyone any ideas please?

Thanks Jess.
I'll check them out now. Looks like William's father may have been in the Army in India. There seems to be a lot of Army references in the articles I've found under the spelling Umballah. This is a whole new research area for me!

Sue, can you check the dates in your first post - unless I'm reading it wrong I am very confused! William Charles must have been born earlier, surely?

Sorry Merry, his birth should be 1848 I've altered it now
You're right, his death was in 1915 and that is the reference. Must be the cold making my fingers type the wrong dates!
