John Coombs West
My Bassett-Lamb Chancery case is still causing me problems:
"Reference: C 13/2744/23 Description: [H1804 B8]. Short title: Bassett v Lamb. Document type: bill only. Plaintiffs: Jane Bassett. Defendant: John Coombs West, William Evans Lamb and William Lamb. Original bill: Easter 1707, Revived Hilary 1800. SFP Note: The naming of a party does not imply that he or she will appear in all the documents in this cause (after the bill) Date: 1804 Held by: The National Archives, Kew" Mary Evans married Richard Hobbs in 1747. One of their daughters, Mary, married John West. So I assume that John Coombs West could be their son. I have found (with slightly different spelling): Name: John Combes West Gender: Male Baptism Date: 30 Jan 1776 Baptism Place: Bromley, Kent, England Father: John West Mother: Mary FHL Film Number: 1042453 Reference ID: item 5 Also, there are other children. But no trace of John Coombs West. I found this too: http://www.genealytreemaker.genealog...ics/west/6057/ Can anyone find any more on this chap? |

I think the date should be 1797 and not 1707.

Have you looked at teh other references? there seems to be a doubt whether the surname is West or Coombe:
Reference: C 12/1424/7 Description: [H1797 B7]. Short title: Bassett v Lamb. Document type: two answers. Plaintiffs: Jane Bassett. Defendant: William Lamb and wife, John Kent and wife, John West (amended to John Coombe) and wife, Charles Mundy and wife and Thomas Bassett. Amended by an order dated 12 June 1797: Charles Mundy and wife removed as defendants. Revived Hilary 1800, Revived Easter 1804 and Revived Trinity 1804. Note: Suit titles taken from OBS 1/660; data on parties taken from IND 1/4204 fo 61v

It looks as if William Lamb, John Kent, John West and Charles Mundy married sisters. Could that be the case?
In which case John Coombe West would be the father, not the son.

Thanks for looking, Phoenix.
This gives the relationships of the sisters: "...And also leaving Def’t Mary now the Wife of Def’t John West, Def’t Hannah now the wife of Def’t Chas Mundy the two daurs of Mary late the Wife of Richd Hobbs Gent one of her Sisters & then dec’ed and Def’t Susannah now the wife of Def’t Wm Lamb and Def’t Jemima now the Wife of Def’t John Kent her two other sisters her Coheiresses at Law her surviving.." Ann Evans married William Bassett. She had three sisters who survived her: Susanna who married William Lamb Jemima who married John Kent. Mary who married Richard Hobbs. However, Mary died, leaving her two daughters Mary and Hannah to inherit. Mary married John West and Hannah married Charles Mundy. |

The one mentioned on that link (end of post #1), who married Mary Ann Judge, is probably John Coomber West, baptised 2 Mar 1828 East Peckham, Kent, son of John and Hannah. He then has a second marriage in 1878 to an Ann Catherine Excell.

It's odd, because I have never found this National Archives reference before. I got all my Chancery papers from Neath. They take up a whole drawer! |

There is a John Coomber West buried 22 Mar 1838 at Brenchley, Kent, age 53, according to FamilySearch. I wonder whether the age could be wrong? It offered to let me view the image but when I clicked, it said I had to be at a FamilySearch Centre.
