Where's good for Irish Ancestry records?

I'm trying to find information on some cousins of mine, whom I believe were born in (Southern) Ireland.

I'm not getting any modern civil Irish records on Ancestry, but then again I don't have a Worldwide membership.

Where's the best place to get Irish records? I've tried Irish Genealogy but don't seem to get any hits.

For Northern Ireland, I believe you can use PRONI, although you have to buy credits.

The Irish civil reg indexes are included in the "UK and Ireland" ancestry sub as far as I know, James. And they are also on FMP, though I assume on there you need an Irish or a world sub. But you can also search them for free on FamilySearch. And they are free to search on the Irish Genealogy site, as you have found.

But - Irish Genealogy's online indexes include "The indexes to Births over 100 years old, the indexes to Marriages over 75 years old and the indexes to Deaths over 50 years old." Originally, they put a lot more than that online, showing exact dates of birth and mother's maiden name for many living people, so they had to take the whole thing offline while they addressed privacy concerns, and that is why the cutoff dates.

The indexes on FamilySearch, ancestry and FMP go up to 1958 (1922 for Northern Ireland), so if your cousins were born after that year they won't be on those either.

If they were born before 1958 and still living, and you are having trouble finding them on the online indexes, you could send me a PM with the details that you have and I'll have a look.

Yeah, they'd certainly be post-1958 and I've had no luck on Ancestry. I just paid the £1 for a month of FMP Worldwide (thanks for the tip!) and unticked auto-renew, so I can search for everything on there now but can't seem to find who I am after. I am pretty sure they were born in Ireland, although possibly Bangor in the North. I know the names and rough dates, certainly.

If there are no post-1958 records at all (if I understand you correctly) then that's that, then.

EDIT: Oh, you'd have to go in person? There are no 'recent' records online anywhere?

Yes, if you want to search the post-1958 indexes, you would need to go in person or have someone go for you (I assume there are professional researchers who you can pay to do this), but if you already know the details required to order the certificates you can download the order forms from that site and order them without actually going there.

You could search for them in the Eircom phone directory.

No good for the North, though.
