Inkermann Henry Wells
I shouldn't be posting this yet, because I haven't finished looking myself, but have to go out and need to sort this by lunchtime!
Inkermann Henry Wells - I have birth, census etc up until 1891 when he is here. I'm not convinced he and Ellen were married as I can't find anything. Inkermann was usually listed as Henry or Harry on the census and he was born 5th Nov 1854 at High Wycombe Bucks, though I think he's said Eton (the family lived there for a while) more than once for his place of birth. I just need to know what happened to him. I've just discovered he had a daughter (don't know if there were any further children after Mabel): Births Sep 1891 WELLS Mabel Maud M Richmond,S. 2a 390 and this dau married in 1911, at which time Harry was dec'd: http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/47...nSearchResults I haven't been able to instantly find Mabel in 1891 or 1911 to potentially help me with sorting out which death is Inkermann's. Discovering the identity of Ellen would be a nice bonus. People are waiting for me so must dash!

For reference, this is the transcription of the 1891 census entry:

I don't know whether this is the same family, but I found the baptism of a Gertrude Ruth Wells 12 Jun 1898 at St John, Richmond, Surrey, born 8th May, parents Harry Richard & Emily Ellen Wells of Shaftesbury Cottage, Shaftesbury Road, father's occupation House Decorator.

Here are Emily Ellen and Gertrude Ruth in 1911:
1911 census on ancestry Hertford James Bradford Head 54 Widower 3 children, 3 living, Waiter Little Munden James Bradford Son 24 Single Tennis Stringer Hertford Heath Emily Ellen Wells Sister 42 Widow married 3 years, 1 child, 1 living, House Keeper Hertford Gertrude Ruth Wells Daughter 12 School Richmond William Bradford Brother 30 Single Carman Hertford And the parents' marriage is 1897 at Ware, Harry Richard Wells and Emily Ellen Bradford. So looks like a red herring. Sorry! Just thought I would add Harry Richard Wells' death reg, Jul-Sep 1899 Richmond, age 48, which does fit pretty well with your Henry on that 1891 census entry. I don't see a birth reg for Harry Richard Wells with a very quick search. |

Still working on the probable red herring - FamilySearch has the marriage of Harry Richard Wells and Emily Ellen Bradford in 1897 at Great Amwell, Hertford, Harry age 40 with father's name Richard Wells, Emily age 29 with father's name George Bradford.
Your Inkermann's father is called Richard on the 1861 census, so I'm starting to think this may not be a red herring after all! |

This looks like Emily Ellen in 1901 but no children with her:

Gertrude (Gerty) is a niece to the Young family in Hoddesden in 1901, but Mabel isn't with them so I still don't know whether it is a red herring or not:

Just realised the image of that 1897 marriage is on FMP:
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/recor...hlights=%22%22 Harry's father is a butcher. |

Quote:
My Harry's father was Richard, as you said, plus, though he never seems to actually do the job of a butcher, that is the trade given on Richard's marriage and death certs!! So, probably not a red herring!! Do you think Hertford Herts and Hammersmith might have been confused due to dodgy handwriting?!

Thanks Kate, apart from still not finding Mabel in 1901, they are now sorted.
The death for Harry Richard was on my shortlist from 2008(!) but until now I'd not got past 1891 with this family. I'm not surprised Harry varied his forenames - the whole family seem to have done this! Thanks again for your help.
