Arrow WW1 Medal Rolls - ancestry

These are the actual rolls to which the medal index cards are an index. Sometimes you may find more information on the roll than there was on the index card.

The huge advantage of these over the cards is that you can see who people were actually with: the names of their friends (or possibly enemies!)

I've found my grandfather's friend. Both signed up at the same time and passed through the same training.

I don't think anyone has got to the bottom of the "burned" documents to see whether a friend's records might have survived in such a case.

This includes the Territorial Force War Medal Rolls, which don't seem to be included in the medal index cards available online.

I'm probably just having a senior moment, but what does 'T of E' stand for? I have found this written alongside my great uncle's name on the War Medals and Victory Medal roll. Some have 'K in A' which I assume means Killed in Action, but I can't think what 'T of E' stands for.

The main advantage of the Rolls is that for lots, but not all, Regiments, Battalion is given, which means that you can then refer to the War Diaries to see what they would have been involved in and where.

I've just been looking at this page where one of the notes is "Termination of Engagement" so it could be that

Thank you Ann for putting it properly. I was taught that you needed the rolls as well as the cards, but it was such a fag to work through the system, only to discover that there was little of obvious significance in them.
