Where was Fitzroy Street, Portsea?
I have several old maps of Portsea and Portsmouth, but for the life of me I can't find Fitzroy Street. It was in the Landport area.
Can anyone help? I don't think it exists any longer. |

On the 1881 census it is in Enumeration District 11, Landport sub-registration district, according to ancestry. This is the link to the description of the enumeration district, which should help to pinpoint where the street was:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/75...1151_1154-0822 "bounded on the north by Common Street, on the east by Fratton Road, on the South by Stamford Street, and on the west by St John's Street", so it should be somewhere in the middle of those!

This document says it ran west from Fratton Road to Clifton Street.

Many thanks, Kate and Maggie. I was looking the wrong side of Fratton Road. I have found it now. It's where my 3x-great-grandmother died.
We visited Portsmouth at the beginning of the week and I'm beginning to find my way around. I was very lucky to find the grave of my 2x-great-grandparents in Kingston cemetery. |
