Another Loose End .......
I've been unable to find the connection between my Headland family & the
following person - Henry Thomas Headland b 1813, Middlesex. I feel there must be a link, as in a London trade directory of 1846 my 3xg uncle Thomas Hughes Headland is shown at the same address - 24 Long Lane Smithfield. Henry Thomas is definitely not a sibling - Thomas Hughes did have a brother Henry, but that was my 2xg grandfather Henry William, an Islington dyer & scourer. Henry Thomas is an oil & colourman. Henry Thomas's parents are shown as John & Ann & I haven't come across them in my research either. He also had a sister named Ann. I've traced Henry T, his wife, & two daughters who remain unmarried, through the censuses (the 1861 census says he was b Chelsea)but nothing rings a bell. I suppose it could be a coincidence that two Headlands were sharing the same premises in 1846, but I wouldn't have thought it was that common a name. Thomas Hughes's father was Thomas Headland b Uxbridge 1786, whose parentage is by no means certain, so anything linking us to Henry Thomas might just help to make that picture a little clearer, too. Can anyone offer any suggestions or pinpoint something I may have missed? |

On the PR image, the baptism for Henry Thomas Headland says born 14 Oct 1812, baptised 22 Nov 1813 at St James, Westminster, parents John and Anne. He had a brother John baptised the same day, born 9 Aug 1809. Abode Pall Mall, father's occupation Servant.
Then Ann was baptised 6 Jun 1817 at St Mary, Marylebone, date of birth 4 Jun 1817. Father's occupation just says Trade. This looks like the parents' marriage (second entry on left hand page): London Marriages and Banns St George Hanover Square, Westminster Marriages in May 1803 397 John Headland and Ann Stone both of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns this fourteenth day of May in the year 1803 by me Tho Nicholas Curate. Thanks Kite - churches named much used by my Headlands, but that could be a coincidence too.

There is a burial 19 Sep 1847 at St Mary, Paddington Green: John Headland age 82, abode Little North Street, St Marylebone.
London Burials And Anne is at 31 Little North Street in 1851, widow, age 75, House Keeper, born Hants Hartley Wintney. 1851 census John's birth should be around 1765 if his age at death is accurate. Shame we don't have a place of birth for him! |

Isn't it just! Can't really believe 1846 is a coincidence.

I wonder whether these children (from FamilySearch) belong to the same couple as above? Froyle is not far from Hartley Wintney.
Susannah Headland baptised 24 Jun 1804 Froyle, Hants, parents John and Ann Susanna Headland baptised 23 Feb 1806 Froyle, Hants, parents John and Ann William Headland baptised 1806 Froyle, Hants, parents John and Ann. They would fill in the gap between the John Headland / Ann Stone marriage in 1803 and the birth of John jr in 1809. Also, I wonder whether John sr had another wife before Ann, as he would have been about 38 in 1803. The marriage to Ann didn't state whether he was a widower. |

with mine, but it does look like Henry T's family. I noticed the gap too. Perhaps late marriage is a Headland trait - I see both Henry T & sister Ann were still unmarried in 1851. And my father was 38 when he married! |

I can't find Henry Thomas Headland and Thomas Hughes Headland recorded at the same address.
In the 1841 census, Henry Thomas headland was at Long Lane while Thomas Hughes Headland was at Great Sutton Street. I can find Freedom of the Cit of London papers from 1841 for Henry Thomas Headland, oilman, of Long Lane, Smithfield, son of John Headland, Red Lion Street, Holborn. [In his will, John Headland is referred to as John Headland the elder.] 1843 directory Headland, Edward, surgeon, 32 Guildford Street, Russell Sq Headland, Henry T, oil and colourman, 24 Long Lane, W Smithfield Headland, Thomas H, silversmith and polisher, 13 Great Sutton St, Clerkenwell Headland, Wm, homeopathic chemist, 15 Princes St, Hannover Sq The 1844, 1845 and 1847 Land Tax records have Henry Thomas Headland at Long Lane. The next directory that I can find is from 1848. The two Headlands in question are at their respective properties - Long Lane and Great Sutton Street. 1848 directory Headland, Edward, surgeon, 32 Guildford Street, Russell Square Headland, George Welsh, beer retailer, 38 Cannon St road Headland, Henry T, oil and colourman, 24 Long Lane, Smithfield Headland, Thomas H, silversmith and polisher, 13 Great Sutton Street Headland, William, homeopathic chemist, 15 Princes St, Hannover Sq and 63 Hannover St, Edinburgh Headland, William, tailor, 43 Chapel Street, Somers town Do you have the details of the 1846 directory, Vita? As the 1843 and 1848 directories both record Henry T and Thomas H at separate addresses, perhaps the 1846 edition can be attributed to a typographical error. This could easily be done given that Thomas H is listed after Henry Thomas and the two have the same initials. |

...and the appearance of William Headland at Chapel Street, Somers Town, confirms the location of Chapel Street - the topic of a thread a few days ago.
