What does the birthplace say?
Hi,
Currently trying to look for a baptism for my great x 3 Grandmother Elizabeth Buxton nee Foote. The 51, 71 census both say she was born in Plymouth but I am struggling to read what it says on the 61 census. I think it might be an abbreviation of Buckfastleigh but wondered what others thought? http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/87...l=ReturnRecord There is a baptism on FMPs Devon baptisms in Buckfastleigh of an Elizabeth Foote that would tie in with her age. There is a John Foote in Sheffield in 1851 that says he's born in Buckfastleigh and this John and the one for Elizabeth had the same parents. I am trying to also work out if John Foote is Elizabeth's brother and how/when they came to Sheffield from Devon.

It looks like "Cuckflee" to me, except the first letter doesn't match the C on the line above. But it doesn't match the B's either. It is quite like some of the C's in Cutler in the occupation column, though.

I agree with you Kite. Husband George above her is born in Corbar but he messed up the spelling of that but like you say, the C in that looks different to the first letter of Elizabeth's birth place.
I was wondering if it said Buckflee in a weird abreviation (maybe enumerator thought the leigh part of Buckfastleigh was lee instead)

Looking at that 1861 census page again, the D of Derbys and the D of Devonshire are very different from each other, so it looks like one of those enumerators with inconsistent handwriting.

It does look like the A in Ann further down the page's name but again, agree with Kite that the handwriting is inconsistent. Unfortunately my knowledge of Devon is almost zero as this is the first time i've got an ancestor from Devon and not sure where to start with trying to research her.
Thank you for the 41 page for John. He's at the same address as in 51. I do feel with both him and Elizabeth coming from Devon that they are brother and sister and they arrive in Sheffield together in the 1820s. Not sure if with their parents or one parent etc.

John Foot's marriage certificate might have to be one I have to buy to check as you say his father's name and who the witnesses were. I am sure i've found John's baptism on the Devon PRs in Buckfastleigh and the father was called John also.
Elizabeth says on the 51 and 71 census that she was born in Plymouth and in 81 she just says Devonshire. But this 61 interests me the most because its clearly not Plymouth it says.
