Default FMP - can someone view this image please?

John Drake marriage

Go to the last entry. John Drake and Sarah Chadder. It looks like it says Mrs Sarah Chadder. Am I right?

That's what it looks like to me.

Yes, it does. I do think Mrs Sarah Chadder was a widow.

Mrs was sometimes used to denote high social status, even for a single woman.

Kate is correct.

I was momentarily confused yesterday when I came across this marriage licence:

"1693-4 Francis Cockett, of St Andrew's, Holborn, Lond., Gent., Bachr., aged 25, and Mrs Alice Battell, of Royson, Herts., Spr., aged 25, at own dispsal, at St Andrew's, Holborn, St Martin in the Fields, or St Anne's, Westminster."

So I can't know if she was married before or not as it doesn't say spinster or widow. I think the family was of a high enough social status that she could have the Mrs and be single.

I'm trying to find the banns to see if that helps but it doesn't look like they are online yet.

fmp is being difficult for me today, but when I looked at this earlier I thought the marriage was by licence (or maybe that was the one above it on the page)

You are right, it was by licence. My brain is not working. lol

I just checked Sarah's will and it only mentions her children and grandchildren except for one woman who I think is someone how lived nearby, the name doesn't ring any bells.

Most Devon marriage licences have been published. It might be worth having a root around to see if anything is online. The earliest licences are the most informative.
