Scottish placename help please
A couple of records relating to my Burton family:
St Cuthbert's Edinburgh 18 Feb 1714 James Burton Freeman Tayler in portsburgh & Janet Hog a s[on] n[amed] Joseph born 9th inst Witt: Jo: Burton Tenent in Holburn William Swinton Freeman Tayler in Portsburgh Alexander Fowler, baker in NNK p married Agnes Burton, daughter of late James B, tenant in Holburn, in Canongate parish, Edinburgh, 7 Nov 1736. This is the placename from Joseph's baptism and it looks like Holburn to me. But the only Holburns I can find on Scotland's Places etc are nowhere near Edinburgh. Am I misreading it? Or can anyone find out where Holburn was in / near Edinburgh, please? |

It won't let me enlarge it - looks like burn at the end.

Best I could come up with is another set of eyes that saw the same as you, Kite.
(From here, which I'm sure you probably already have.) Scottish Record Society Register of Marriages for the Parish of Edinburgh, 1701-1750 I stood on my head looking for a place named Holburn or even Holborn in or near Edinburgh without any success. |

There's a Howburn about 25 miles outside Edinburgh, but I would have thought it ought to be a place in Canongate parish, which is in the centre of Edinburgh.
Maybe the street names have changed? |

I tried to find a street map for Edinburgh but the earliest one I could find was 1855.
It certainly looks like Holburn. |

Wonder if it could be Haltoun's House which is mentioned below. Seems people came from Inveresk to marry in Edinburgh so perhaps Holburn is further afield.
http://www.ancestor.abel.co.uk/inv/marrc.html Below is a map of central Edinburgh probably around 1850 which lists loads of closes but I can't see one that matches. http://maps.nls.uk/towns/detail.cfm?id=415
