Default Can anyone see this family on the 1881 census?

I am looking on the 81 census for William Blades who was born 1837 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. His wife was Maria Sophia Blades who sometimes was just Sophia or Sophia Maria . She was born in Lincoln in 1833. They had one child that I know of, Charlotte Blades born 1864 in Liverpool, Lancs.

They were living at 54 Prince Edwin Lane, Everton, Lancashire in 1871.

In 1891, I have found Sophia now married to Joseph Massey and they are both listed as visitors at the home of the now married Charlotte and her husband Robert Cave. They are in Rainford, Lancashire.

I cannot see them at all on the 81 census. Maybe William had already died by 1881 and its just Sophia & Charlotte I cannot find. But I cannot see a likely death at moment for William

Quick note to say this family sometimes used the surname Lunn when they fancied a change This particular branch as yet never did use Lunn but who knows on this census.

Thank you Elizabeth for that death. Feel silly that I never saw that.

Sophia remarried in 1888 at Liverpool Registry Office according to LancsBMD.

Daughter Charlotte married in Kirkdale in 1889.

No joy so far with the 1881 Census, but the marriage between Joseph Massey and Sophia Blades is on Ancestry, and it is a Catholic marriage:

Name: Josephum Massey
Marriage Date: 6 Aug 1888
Parish: St Joseph, Lancashire, England
Spouse's Name: Sophiam Blades
Father's Name: Jacobi Massey
Spouse Father's Name: Josephi Lann Blades

Was Sophia a Blades before marriage too?

Name: William Blades
Age: Full Age
Marriage Date: 16 Dec 1860
Parish: Liverpool, St Luke
Spouse's Name: Sophie Blades
Father's Name: William Wright
Spouse Father's Name: Joseph Lane Blades
Reference Number: 283 LUK/3/4

And why was William's father William Wright?

Oh wow, thank you for the marriage. Never even checked Ancestry for that with the LancsBMD saying it was a register office marriage. Just checked that again and it does add 'or register attended'. Never knew that was how a catholic marriage was described in registers.

Yes, Sophia was a Blades too. William & Sophia were first cousins. I have no idea why William described his father as William Wright. He was actually illegitimate. His mother was Charlotte Blades who had 3 illegitimate children. No idea if they had different fathers. William's maternal mother's maiden name was Wright so I did wonder if he had made it up to cover his illegitimacy.

I still can't find them on the 1881 census, Claire. Very frustrating.

Ancestry is pretty good for Liverpool records. I couldn't find a burial, though.

I really appreciate you having a look for them. I wonder if it is a really bad transcription error or they have just not been recorded anywhere. I agree that in theory they should still be in the Everton area.

I've had hit and miss results with this family on the Ancestry Liverpool records because it would appear a lot of their baptisms/marriages/burials seems to have taken place at a church they don't have the records for

If you're looking for William's burial in 1885 then he probably wasn't buried in a churchyard but in a municipal cemetery and ancestry don't have records for many of those at all.
