Default Bucks Genealogical Society QUARTER SESSIONS -YOUR ANCESTOR & THE LAW

From Buckinghamshire rootsweb mailing list:

From: Eve McLaughlin
Subject: [BKM] QUARTER SESSIONS -YOUR ANCESTOR & THE LAW

On Sat April 14 at 2.30 (doors 2pm)
Ian Waller tells the Bucks Genealogical Society all about QUARTER
SESSIONS. They didn't just deal with basic criminals but more or less
everything -pubs, poor law, planning, bastards, bridges, badgers,
swearing, settlements, swine fever, nonconformists, neighbours from
hell, -even whether your ancestor went to church. A terrific source of
information beyond mere names and dates. Plus actual records from
BUcks, Herts, Warwicks, Kent, Lincolnshire etc and a chance to have your
problems solved by Eve McLaughlin from 2pm.

I've heard a lot of talks by Ian Waller - he is my favourite regular speaker - but that one is a new one on me.

He is excellent because he is always researching, so his information is found, not learned.

I can vouch for the usefulness of Quarter Sessions- and Bucks in particular. I found the settlement dispute over my gt x 3 grandfather Robert Chowns, including the evidence book which gave his answers to questions. It told me he kept pigs, how much his rent was, his father-in-law's employer, that the ceiling fell in, all sorts of domestic details which brought him to life in his own words.
