Default Gumms

In the will of Thomas Gumm of Henley, Oxon written in 1850, he leaves some money to John, son of his brother James and to John's son Thomas. I could do with some help finding more on John and Thomas.

James married Sarah Faithman in Tottenham, Middlesex in 1807 and two children were baptised at Henley, Oxon - John in 1809 and Susanna in 1808. I don't know anything more of them but I'm assuming that James was dead by then. There is a burial at Swyncombe - a few miles from Henley - for a 32 year old Susanna Gumm in 1840 who looks likely to be mine.

Does the will give John's occupation, Asa?

No, it doesn't - just 'son of my brother James'. They were a fairly well off family generally I think - farmers etc

Thanks Shona - sorry I should have mentioned this Thomas - that's a great nephew as well but the grandson of Thomas who made the will's eldest brother William

On FS, there is a reference to Thomas Gum, b 1845, Great Kimble, Oxon, living in Monk's Risborough, parents are John and Elizabeth Gum. But I can't find it on Ancestry and FS is now saying it's having technical problems. Grrr.

Ah thank you, Shona - that looks promising - although John was baptised in Henley I'm pretty sure there was no address on the baptism.

That family is down as Gunn in 1851:
Church Houses, Great Kimble, Bucks
Elizabeth Cutler Head Widow 68 Pauper, Lace Maker Bucks Wingrove
Phebe Do Daur U 30 Lace Maker Do Great Kimble
John Do Son U 26 Farm Labourer Do Do
John Gunn Son in Law Mar 45 Do Do Bucks Stone
Elizabeth Do Son in Law's Wife Mar 38 Lace Maker " Great Kimble
Sarah Do Daur U 15 Do Do Do Do
Thomas Do Son 6 Scholar Do Do
Joseph Do Son 3 Do Do Do
Ann Do Daur 1 Do Do

Not sure whether "son in law's wife" is a convoluted way of saying "daughter", or if John Gunn is Elizabeth Cutler's stepson! (Though if he was her stepson he would probably have the same surname as her.)

Phebe Cutler's baptism is on FamilySearch, 17 Jun 1821 Great Kimble, Buckinghamshire, parents James and Elizabeth. But I can't see an Elizabeth with the same parents unless it is the one baptised in Datchet, Bucks, 27 Apr 1806.
