Julie, I'm so excited!
The little village is just a few miles west of Aylesbury and is so sweet. The church was in some disrepair and was being renovated when R. and I visited. We saw the huge memorial inside the church to the Rose family, but then I didn't know that it listed three of my ancestors! I'm planning my next trip to Bucks. Archives, so if you want anything looking up whilst I'm there just let me know. |

The memorial in the church has been photographed and an attempt made to read the inscription on the link I gave above, and has been immensely useful.
I have now found, on Google Books, a book that is out of copyright, and I have downloaded it to my tablet. It gives: On plain mural tables of white marble on the south side of the nave: In the vault beneath are deposited the remains of Susannah, the wife of Mr. Thomas Rose of this parish, who died the 15th of Novr, 1778, aged 35 years. Also of Jane, their second daughter, who having first married Mr. John Parrott, and afterwards Mr. Thomas Tuck, died the 8th of January, 1798, aged 31 years. Also of John, son of John Rose of Gray’s Inn, London, Gent. second son of the said Thomas and Susannah Rose, and Elizabeth his wife, who died the 30th of March, 1798, aged 8 months. Also of Catherine, the only child of the said Jane by her last husband, who died the 13th of July, 1798, aged 2 years and 11 months. Also of Mary Lowe, 3d daughter of the said Thomas and Susannah Rose, and wife of William Low of the Middle Temple, London, Gent. who died the 22d of December, 1800, aged 29 years. The remains of Elizabeth, second wife of the said Thomas Rose, who died the 24th of March, 1800, aged 60 years, were, by her own desire, interred near her relations on the south side of the churchyard. The said Thomas Rose died the 3d of Feby. 1809, aged 68 years: and her (sic) remain are deposited in the same vault. All the sons of the said Thomas and Susannah, namely, Thomas, John, Richard, William, and Joseph,, and their 4th and youngest daughter Anne, who married Mr. Richard Rose, junr. survive them. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth, who married Mr. Thomas Randolph, died the 2d of December, 1798, aged 36 years, and was buried at Long Crendon. In Memory of Thomas Rose, eldest son of the late Thomas and Susannah Rose, who died a Batchelor the 27th of September, 1813, aged 49 years. Anne, youngest daughter of the late Thomas and Susannah Rose, and widow of Richard Rose, junr. died 12th March 1816, aged 40 years. William, second son of the said Richard and Anne Rose, died 15th August, 1804, aged 6 months. Four children of Joseph Rose (youngest son of the said Thomas and Susannah Rose) and Louisa his wife, died in infancy, viz. Harriet Elizabeth 26th April 1805 aged 11 months; Mary, 5th December 1805 aged 3 months; Thomas Joseph 16th June 1807 aged 4 months. Louisa 4th Jany. 1815 aged 6 months. I now have the details relating to my ancestor Jane Rose. Poor darling, she died aged 31, the same age as my younger daughter. More people were added to the family vault later, which the link shows. Julie, it's the three daughters of Thomas Rose who pre-deceased him that chokes me up. I doesn't say, but I bet childbearing contributed towards some of the deaths.
Thomas' will gives me lots of details of the grandchildren, but not all the names. We are booked in to the Centre of Buckinghamshire Studies for next Tuesday - I can't wait! |
