Default Another Cork query

Looking for a Sands family in Cork c 1842 and could do with being put in the right direction

All I have is a Bridget Sands who says in 1901 census that she was born in Cork. A James Sands was godfather to one of her sons in 1870 - could he be a brother?

She married a Francis McQuade/McQuaid/McQuid (can't find marriage) and their first child was born in Jarrow in 1864.

I went onto findmypast in case the Sands was a military family and she was born where her father was station but only found a reference to the Cork Constitution?

14 Sept 1837 for a James Sands in Kinsale - died at his residence "whose loss will be severely felt by the poor of that town"

now could that be a relative or a red herring

Another was a Captain George Sands of Dunowen in the Clonakilty Directory (don't know which year).

Neither of these seems likely but trying to find any Sands in Cork is problematic.

Did find in the 1881 census a married lady Kate Sands born in Cork living in Birmingham (no husband though).

This is the only one of my Irish rellies that actually says where she came from the rest I haven't a clue.

According to the baptism of Thomas McQuade
born 19th decenber 1864
baptised 25th December 1864 at St Bede,Jarrow,Durham
father Francisci McQuade
mother BIRGITTA Sands McQuade

now - is BIRGITTA Latin for Bridget - or was her name Birgitta ??
I have to confess I have never seen the name Birgiitta before .

Sorry Merry - but I noticed people were looking at city directories etc and wondered if they went back as far as 1860 or found other places for me to look.

and might help me solve my riddle. Haven't even found the marriage of Bridget & Francis!!! c1863??

Yes it's Bridget McQuade who died in 1909 - the RC records tend to be in latin.

Yes the children were all baptised at St Bede's RC church in Jarrow and James Sands was godfather to their third child in 1870.

Thomas b1864 godparents - Laurence Bradly & Rosanna Donnelly
Sarah Jane b1868 godparents - Hugh & Sarah Lavery
Francis b1870 - godparents - James Sands & Catherine Cullen
Joseph b1873- godparents - haven't got the baptism
Patrick b1876- godparent - Mary Ann Hughes

Sorry got to go now for awhile -

I see that the Roots Ireland website only has records for the north of Cork online at the moment, so it could be that your Sands family will turn up on there when / if they put the south part online.

It does have a few matches for the name Sands in the north of Cork which might be worth looking at if you haven't already.
