There is an entry in the National Probate Calendar for 1879, Morf:
BAILEY John Spear Personal Estate under £450. 11 February. The Will of John Spear Bailey late of Chapel-row Pill in the Parish of Easton in Gordano in the County of Somerset who died 28 January 1879 at Golden Key High-street in the City of Bristol was proved at Bristol by James Dibbins Hall and John Spear Bailey the Son both of Pill Pilots the Executors. |

Any chance he married a second time, Morf? There is this household on the 1851 census at Easton in Gordano / St George, with a John Spear age 36 next door:
John Bailey Head Mar 52 Waterman Somerset St George Mary Bailey Wife Mar 50 Do Do Sarah Manley Visitor Wid 23 Do Do Augusta Cox Servt U 17 House Servant Do Do James Cox Nephew 13 Scholar Do Do Thomas Manley Nephew 11 Do Do Edit - forget that, I see your John is still with Harriet in 1871 and she is on the 1851 listed as "Wife" with no husband there, so I suppose he was at sea on the 1841 - 1861 censuses. |

Sorry Kate, I've been out tonight, so only just noticed this.
Looking at the probate report, I think at some point I must have seen this and recorded it on my tree, I wondered where I had this info from lol. The 1851 census, is a coincidence, but yes, he was probably at sea for most of the census. Thank you for the info. |
