Default A begging post!

I have just read on another forum that FMP have Manchester Workhouse and prison records.

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to have a look for any JAMES HOLDEN appearing in either of these institutions. His life span was 1824 - 1898 but I am particularly interested in the years between 1881 and 1898 when he vanished off the family radar (he hadn't gone far because he died in Lancashire in 1898).

Thankyou in advance.

OC

OC, do you want the good news first?

There are 26 prison records for James Holdens.

The last is for 1878, unfortunately.
This one was 36 and born in Bolton, Lancashire.

Hmm Manchester workhouse itself, all much younger males then you want.

For the prison records the nearest is James b about 1820 and based in Salford. Received a short sentence in 1864.

For the workhouse entries there are no sensible matches for Manchester and a whole lot for Bury, but none of those list age which is why the list is longer! If you think he might have been there then I am happy to look through them.

My knowledge of the geography of Lancs is non-existent!

There doesn't seem to be anyone with a dob about 1824.
However, the records don't seem to cover the period you want.

Oh, thankyou everyone, I should have remembered just how many James Holdens there were in Manchester. Mine was born in Wheelton/Chorley.

This was just a straw-clutching exercise because he does not appear on the 1891 census anywhere, even though he didn't die until 1898.

Thanks again. No stone unturned, etc!
