Hi,
I am trying to find Mary Ann Graves on the 1871 census and the 1911 census.

She was born 1862 in Hull and registered JFM 1862 in Sculcoates.

1871 - missing

1881 - General servant. Living with Charles and Ann Clayton.
Birthplace recorded as HULL

1891 - Drapers Assistant. Living with Charles and Ann Clayton.
Birthplace recorded as Cromwell, New Zealand but think this must be an error by the enumerator.

1901 - Housekeeper. Living with Charles Clayton (Ann died 1899)
Birthplace recorded as HULL

1911 - missing

Ann Clayton's maiden name was GRAVES and she married Charles Clayton in 1869. I have found Ann at the time of the 1861 census and she is in service, which I was quite surprised about as she was from a very well off family.

Mary Graves (1847-1911) who was the sister of Ann, mentions Mary Ann Graves in her will and mentions her as her Niece.

At the moment, I am thinking the most likely scenario is that she was Ann's daughter, as I can't see any of the other siblings who she might belong to.

Mary Ann is not with Charles and Ann in 1871, but I have been unable to find Mary Snr at the time of the 1871 census. I have also been unable to find Mary and Ann's brother Philip (born Saltfleetby in 1834). Mary and Philip seem to have been very close. He never married, and she only married much later in life. They lived together in 1881, 1891 and he died at her house in 1900.

Ann, Mary and Philip had a sister called Lucy who went on to have children, but married before Mary Ann was born and their brother Epton (from whom I am descended) married in 1866. I have accounted for all his children.

Thanks for looking.

Mary Ann never married. She died in Hull in 1932. The Executor is Lucy's daughter (her cousin).

I'm confused, Tom - who is Peter, please?

Mary from Italy

A bit tenuous, but there's a 6-year old Mary A Gray, born Hull, who's a nurse child with Elizabeth Lascelles in 1871.

Probably the nickname of Mary and Ann's sister Philip :d

FreeBMD has a Mary Adelaide Gray birth registered Jul-Sep 1864 Hull.

I've spent quite a while looking for these people but with no luck! I suppose Mary Ann's birth cert would tell you who her mother was.

Looking at the 1881 census when Charles and Ann Clayton were living in Hackney...

Charles Clayton, head, married, 39, linen draper, born Lincolnshire, Goxhill
Anne Clayton, wife, married, 40, born Lincolnshire, Saltfleetby
Charles Graves, nephew, 11, scholar, born Lincolnshire, Saltfleetby
Janet Holland, assistant, unmarried, 24, born Bristol
Henry William Ravenhill, apprentice, unmarried, 17, born Middlesex, St John's Wood
Mary Ann Graves, servant, unmarried, 19, general servant, born Yorkshire, Hull

How does the nephew Charles Graves fit in? Whose child is he?

OK, jotting this down for reference.

1841 census - Saltfleetby

William Graves, 30, farmer
Mary Graves, 30
Lucy Graves, 8
Phillip Graves, 7
Emma Graves, 2

All born in country.

Mary's maiden name was Epton. Searching both Ancestry and Family Search, I found the following six children baptised in Saltfleetby, Lincs, whose parents were William Graves and Mary.

James, bpt 15 May 1830
Lucy, bpt 11 Sept 1832
Philip, bpt 19 Jan 1834
Ann, bpt 5 June 1836
Emma, bpt 16 Dec 1838
James, bpt 15 April 1841

The birth of Epton Graves was registered in Louth in the second quarter of 1843.
The birth of a Mary Graves was also registered in Louth - first quarter of 1848.

1851 census - Saltfleetby

William Graves, head, married, 43, farmer 36 acres, born Saltfleetby
Mary Graves, wife, married, 41, farmer's wife, born Burwell Park
Epton Graves, son, unmarried, 7, farmer's son, born Saltfleetby
Mary Graves, daughter, unmarried, 3, farmer's daughter, born Saltfleetby

In 1851, Ann Graves, 14, born Saltfleetby, was a house servant, living with her grandparents, William and Sarah Epton, in Langton, Lincs.

Turning to the 1861 census, William Graves plus Epton and Mary are still in Saltfleetby.

Mary Graves was visiting her daughter Emma when the 1861 census was done.

1861 census - West Torrington

Emma Gregson, head, widow (?), 22, assistant machinist, born Saltfleetby
Mary Greave, visitor, married, 51, farmer's wife, born Burwell

It looks as if Emma died soon after as there is a death registered in the Louth district in the second quarter of 1861.

That rules her out to be Mary Ann's mother.

In 1851, Phillip Graves, 16, servant, born Saltfleetby, is working as a groom, and is recorded in the household of Samuel Andrews in Gayton-le-Marsh.

Thanks for looking everyone.

Charles was the son of Epton Graves, and is my great great grandfather.

I think I will buy the birth certificate. Curiosity has got the better of me, although my money is on Ann being her Mother.

Regarding Emma. She married in 1859. Her husband died in April 1861 and she then died in childbirth in May 1861. No children's births/deaths registered in the same quarter, so assume it was a stillbirth.

Finally got around to buying the certificate.

Mary Ann was Ann's daughter. No father mentioned. Wonder what the circumstances were. No other cases like this in this branch of the family and they all stayed fairly local, but Ann obviously went to Hull to give birth. Wonder if it was widely known.

Guess there are some things we shall never know.
