28th of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath to lose his life in WW1.
Frank was born on 7th June 1887 in Haywards Heath, one of the seven children of John Spencer, a gardener, and his wife Maria. In 1891 the family were at 2 Boltro Cottages, with two lodgers, and in 1901 they lived in South Road.
Around 1905 Frank had joined the Royal Navy and on census night 1911 was a signalman, but was not working as he was unwell and a patient in the Royal Navy Hospital at Alverstoke, Hampshire. His parents lived in the Lodge House at Oaklands (still there, next to our modern library) where his father was gardener to Sir James Bradford.
Frank died at sea on his ship HMS Black Prince along with 856 fellow crew members when it was sunk on 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial at Southsea.
