I'm trying to discover more about my great-uncle's first wife.

This is her first marriage:

Name: Jack Brooker
Birth Date: 1891
Age: 25
Spouse's Name: Dorothie Edith Wharton
Spouse's Birth Date: 1893
Spouse's Age: 23
Event Date: 13 Jun 1916
Event Place: St. Mary'S, Bitton, Gloucester, England
Father's Name: Fitzhardinge Woodford Brooker
Mother's Name:
Spouse's Father's Name: James Joseph Wharton
Spouse's Mother's Name:

Indexing Project (Batch) Number: I03835-2
System Origin: England-EASy
GS Film number: 1597067
Reference ID: 180

The Brookers seem to have lived in Argentina for a while. Fitzharding Brooker was born on the Channel Islands.

I suspect that Dorothée was born abroad too, as I haven't found a birth so far. From the marriage she should have been born c. 1893.

Jack's service record is on FMP - it says he was fluent in Spanish and able to understand Italian and Portuguese.

When did he die or did they divorce?

Kenneth Noel Purkis and Dorothee Edith Wharton/Brooker married on 22nd October 1925. Dorothee became pregnant but suffered meningitis and died on 29th May 1926. Her infant daughter was rapidly delivered by Caesarean section after her mother died. She was handicapped and I know she was greatly loved.

Death
Purkis. – On Oct. 18, 1937, at “Parkland” Sydenham (her home for eight years), Dorothée, little invalid daughter of the late Dr. K.N. Purkis of Beckenham. The sweetest and most tenderly loved little charge. At rest.

I'd love to find out more about Dorothée so any help would be appreciated.

Could this be Dorothy(ee)?

1901 census:

James I Wharton 43
Annie M Wharton 48
Clara Wharton 18
Annie Wharton 11
Dorothy Wharton 8 < b Marylebone
Elsa Wharton 3

James Joseph Wharton married Annie Margarita Andrews in 1879.

Birth reg could be this one:

Births Mar 1893
Wharton Edith Dorothy Marylebone 1a 623

I'm trying to work out if this is the same person:

1911

Annie Burden 50
Lilla Burden 45
Edith Wharton 17 < b Westminster

She is a niece of the two Burdens who are single sisters. So not instantly fitting in to the tree of Whartons and Andrews!!

Annie Margarita Wharton s a widow in 1911 and has two of her four surviving children with her (not Edith/Dorothy), but she might be one of the non-survivors and therefore not your Dorothee.

Thank, Merry. I kept looking at that birth registration but I couldn't find them on the census. I'll have a better look. I can't find a baptism on Ancestry.

Apart from the birth reg there are no other entries for Edith D Wharton with the names that way round. Not that this proves much.

I presume the Brooker/Wharton births in Uxbridge are to do with another Brooker/Wharton marriage in Fulham in 1915?

When is your last sighting of Jack Brooker?

Exactly, Merry!:D Not many for Dorothée Edith, either. That's why I wondered about her being born abroad.

OOH!

November 1919 - Jack Brooker an air pilot is leaving for Buenos Aires with I.A. Brooker, a female. Both 28. It doesn't look like Dorothée. Had they already divorced??

Many thanks, Kate. That explains it. At first I was trying to find a war death for him. Poor Dorothée didn't have much luck, it seems.

They weren't divorced until 1920, it seems. I wonder who the woman was.

I've found Dorothée and Jack's marriage in the Times.

It just says that Dorothée is the daughter of Mrs Wharton of Bromley, Kent.

Merry

That's where Annie M was living in 1911. I see she seems to have died when aged 99.

On Jack's WWI service record his wife (just Mrs J Brooker) is living at 137 Crown Lane, Bromley Common, Kent.

Do you think we should remove the children's names from that post, Merry?

Jack Brooker's marriage to Iva A Brooker is on the GRO index Jul-Sep 1933 in St Martin district. Alternative surnames for Iva are Wells and Craven. So her maiden name must be either Wells or Craven, then she was married to a Craven or a Wells, then she changed her name to Brooker before actually marrying Jack.

Iva A Craven married John A E Wells Jul-Sep 1913 Knaresbro' district.

Good point, I'll do it is a second

Iva Archer Craven married a Mr Wells in Knaresborough in 1913 then Iva Archer Brooker dies with corresponding birth details of 1891. All in Yorkshire though.

Time to cook (I've not looked at her properly)

Divorce Court File: 3527. Appellant: John Alfred Edmund Wells. Respondent: Iva Archer Wells. Co-respondent: John Brookes. Type: Husband's petition for divorce [hd].

Looks as though he didn't get Jack's name quite right.

Thanks, Kate and Merry. You've been busy while I have been on the phone with my sister!

A tangled web of marriages and divorces, I see.

I can't find a will for James Joseph Wharton.

There's a tree on Ancestry:

It has very little information.
