I have an ancestor listed in above for 1860.Can anyone please tell me if this was used just to assist authorities in tracing individuals?
I've Googled term, but with no luck.

It sounds like the old kind of city directory, Vita. They used to list the posh people in the "court" section, separate from the "tradespeople".

Thanks, Kite - thought that might be the what it was, but only the "posh" included in the

court section? He would have loved that ! He most definitely had aspirations after a very

humble beginning.

Well, by 1860 I don't think the Court section was as exclusive as it was in the earlier part of the 19th century.

Well, I was going to say re your first post, Shona - "Thanks for that! Just as I was about

to share in a bit of reflected glory!" & then I read the link you provided(thanks) & I think

he would have been well pleased to have been included among "people of social

standing."
