On Tuesday we went over to Aylesbury to the RO and then went to St Mary's Church to view the tomb that they had discovered under years' growth of ivy.

I thought you might like to see some photos.

The next photo shows a grave next to the tomb. It is of Henry Hayward, surgeon, and one of his daughters:

What a tremendous find. Great pics.

Thanks, Shona, I feel very lucky to have found this.

I have deciphered a little more of the end of the tomb which is barely legible.
Luckily NBI3 helps with some of the burial dates and I also have wills and a couple of newspaper articles to help too.

Who cleared all the undergrowth off?

ElizabethHerts

Jess, here's the link that explains:

Thanks, Julie, when you come next year we must walk up to the church. It's a lovely spot.

Looking forward to it .. just hope the ivy doesn't grow back too quickly ..

I don't think it will be allowed to now! There's a man who lives in the close and the tomb is almost outside his house. He is very interested in the history of Aylesbury.

My greatgrandmother Sarah Smith nee Ware has litchen covering her name on her headstone and I want to remove it but am told I can't. I know when the family paid for the headstone and the inscription, they thought it would be legible for a long time and would be very distressed if they saw it now. They would see it is an insult to her.

Julie, it's so distressing to see the state of some tombs. I think the problem is that by removing ivy, lichen etc you can damage the face of the stone and remove some of it with the unwanted greenery.

Where is the grave?

I know you need to be careful Elizabeth, but if the people paid for a headstone with an inscription, what is the point if you can't read it. The headstone is here in Tenterfield. One of these days, when I find more hours in the day, I'm going to see what legally can be done because it is only going to get worse.

If it is done professionally surely that would be acceptable?

tenterfieldjulie

Hopefully, but there are council employees who have a little power which sometimes goes to their heads. Getting someone here who is considered a professional is another thing.. It is on a black marble obelisk which may stain, so it really does need a professional, which is why I dither.

Elizabeth, what a lovely find.

One day (goodness knows when) I'm hoping to visit to Aylesbury as I have a recently discovered branch from round there.

And as they had money I'm hoping they left some gravestones!

ElizabethHerts

If you want a look-up done, Lindsay, let me know. We will be going over again soon.

Lindsay

Thanks for the offer, Elizabeth, I'll bear it in mind.

They seem to have moved from Aylesbury to Wendover and back again over several generations - I've found the Bucks FHS CDs very useful in tracking them.

So far the only MI I've found is from a book on Googlebooks, for a plaque on the wall of Wendover church.

What is the surname?

Lindsay

Edmonds, Stace and Gurney are the lines I've found most on, mainly pre-1800.

Yes, I've ordered several of them. Isn't it a wonderful site?

I haven't sent for that particular one, as I haven't yet tied her in to my line, but I'll probably end up getting it just to see if there are any clues there.

I photographed 7 when I was there last week - you just pay £5 for a camera pass.

The problem is I have found another 9 I need to see.:D
