Although Michigan is apparently fully indexed, I can't find my Great Uncles & Great Aunts.

Can anyone find them for me please?

Charles Ralph Kilpatrick, born abt 1885 in Ontario, Canada.
His wife Alma, born 14 October 1889 in North Dakota, USA.
Their 2 daughters had probably left home by then.
Rose, born 1915 and Violet born 1916, both in Canada.

Here they are in 1930.

Charles & Alma both died in 1955 in Detroit, Michigan, amd I remember my Dad talking about them, but I don't know what happened to the daughters.

Charles' brother Herb(ert) Alexander Kilpatrick, born Manitoba, Canada in 1889. I know he became a US citizen, but on census and other records I have found his birthplace is given as Michigan, but family history says he was born in Manitoba. As far as I know, his parents never lived in Michigan, only in North Dakota other than in Canada. Herb died in 1942 in Detroit.

Herb married twice, first to Gertrude Sanborn (b 1899 New York) in 1913 and then after their divorce, to Rose Edwards (b abt 1899 in Canada). Not sure what year Herb & Rose married, nor when he divorced Gertrude, but the divorce was prior to 1940.

Gertrude then married Herb & Charles' brother George in 1941!
I have found Gertrude in 1940 as head, living with George & his son George and her nephew William Sanborn.

I remember being told Aunt Rose & Aunt Gertrude couldn't stand each other and the other was never to be mentioned in either Aunt's company!;)

I cannot find Herb or Rose in 1940. They should be in Detroit, Michigan.
EDIT I've just found a Rose Edwards of the right age with husband Thomas living in Detroit Wayne, Michigan in 1940 so maybe she married Herb later than I thought.

Herbert & Gertrude in 1920.

No sign of them yet, so I'm trying another tactic of following them through the city directories. This one to start from:

1931 - Kilpatrick
Chas R (Alma R) driver h15732 Greenlawn av
Herbert A (Gertrude E) wire chf h94929 Burnette av.

I suppose, in theory, they could have been visiting family in Canada at the time. Their father had died in 1931, but their brother, my grandfather, was living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Two of my uncles and my Dad, their nephews, were serving overseas in WW2 but I'm not sure if they had enlisted by 1940.

1932 - Chas same.
Herbert A radio despr r1159 Calvert av.
Rose S M student r15732 Greenlawn av.

1934 same for Chas
Herbert A wire chf h1195 Webb av apt 304.
Rose S and Violet L r15732 Greenlawn av.

1935 Chas R (Alma) landscape gdnr h15732 Greenlawn av
Herbert A (Rose) electn h1195 Webb av apt 304
Rose and Violet r15732 Greenlawn av.

The later editions seem to be missing the relevant pages.

Oh, the Webb Av part of the 1940 directory is there, but someone else is at 1195 apt 304. It was vacant in 1938.

You can find Greenlawn Avenue on the 1940 census search by typing Detroit in the Township field and Greenlawn in the keywords field, but I haven't managed to find house number 15732. The house numbers seem to be in a kind of random order unless I'm missing something!

Thanks for all that Kite. Where are you finding the directories please? I can only find Charles listed in 1919 directory.

In 1935 directory you have put Herbert A with Rose in brackets. I'm being thick here I think but does that mean Rose was his wife at that time?

I was browsing the directories on their beta thingy - the search on there isn't very good so I usually browse instead.

Yes, I think it does.

House numbering on long roads is often by linear measurement. For example in rural NZ it's in kilometres and fractions.

Sue, have you seen the 1916 Canadian census? On there it's a son Ross, not a daughter Rose.

They have his father George with them. Also, next door there is a younger George, his wife, and his brother William.

Haven't been able to nail them on the 1940, sorry.

Thanks Janet. Yes I do have that census. I'd never noticed that Rose/Ross was listed as 'son' before! Amazing what another pair of eyes can find! William was my grandfather.
