Default James Cohen - OH FFMF

Name - James Cohen in Australia; Cowen in Norfolk, England. - marriage BDM Index as Cornelius Gowen
Date and place of birth - 1798 Lynn, Norfolk
Names of parents - James Cowen and Jane ?
Date and place of baptism - 30/3/1798 Lynn, Norfolk
Marriage: Isabella Smith on 2 March 1829 Windsor, Hawkesbury, New South Wales, Australia by Banns. Both parties made their x marks.
Granted perrmission to marry 25 Feb 1829 by Rev. J. Docker at Windsor: Cornelius Cowen, age 31, "Shipley 2", 7 years, free and
Isabella Smith, 22, "Persian" &"Harvey" from Van Diemens Land, 7 years, bond
Occupation(s) - labourer/seaman - a convict - a farmer in 1828 - and a labourer.
"Cornelius or James Cowen was convicted of larceny on 19 January 1818, at Sessions held at Kings Lynn Norfolk UK.
He was a seaman or a labourer aged 20 and had stolen a watch to the value of 5/-, the property of William Watson, plus 2 linen shirts (value 1/- each), 1 linen waistcoat (value 6 pence), one pair of stockings (value 2 pence), 1 cotton handkerchief (value 1 penny), and 1 red leather pocket book (value 1 penny), the property of John Hurst. Total value of stolen goods seven shillings and ten pence. Cornelius was found guilty and sentenced to transportation for seven years. He arrived in Australia on the ship 'Shipley 2' on18/11/1818, the ship having left England in July 1818 with 150 male convicts on board. He was described as being 5 ft 2 inches tall, brown hair, dark eyes, dark/pale completion. A ticket of leave was issued no. 207/1141 and his certificate of freedom was issued on 9/3/1826 no. 48/5020, his age being given as 27.

He is listed in the 1828 Census, pages 105 & 427, as a farmer of 10 acres, cleared and cultivated at Cornwalis NSW, aged 30.

Addresses where lived: Lynn, Norfolk; Cornwalis, NSW 1828, Windsor/Wilberforce NSW Australia between 1832 and 1848 (7 children); Pitt Town Road, Windsor, NSW, Australia 1855
Date, place and cause of death: 26 January 1855, Windsor, unknown (have cert very little information)
Date and place of burial: 28 January 1855, C of E, Windsor.
Details of will / administration of their estate - unknown
Memorial inscription - nil

Children: Mary 1830, James 1832, Elizabeth 1836 (married James Whyburn), Catherine 1838 married Thomas Greentree, Isabella 1840 married ??, George 1842, Jane 1846, James (2nd) 1848.
