National Probate Calendar (England and Wales) - ancestry
Looks as if this could be very very exciting!
Let us know what you find! |
oooh thank you :)
|
Thanks Kate.
My lot don't seem to have left a will but my OH's have plenty. |
I should mention that it also includes people who held property in England and Wales but died elsewhere.
|
Dumbo question - I have found loads of Wills relating to my family, how do I now go about ordering a copy?
|
Think it still costs £5 for a postal copy, anyway, you can download the form PA1S and send it to York, or if you can get to one of the probate offices I believe you can get a copy there and then.
|
sorry, Kate. I was a bit excited so hit ancestry straight away
*hangs head in shame* Anyway - I have already had a *screeeeeeeeeeeeeeam* moment with an early find!!!! Something I thought I'd never find out................. |
Sounds exciting, Zoe; are you going to give us the details?
|
just posted a new thread because I need help with it
|
Ooh, brilliant - I'd missed this thread earlier.

My daughter is looking for any more that might be of interest as she has an Ancestry subscription.
I have most of the wills that I want for my family (after numerous visits to the Probate Office). The wills I'm collecting now are pre-1858 and they are much more difficult to locate. |
There are quite a few years missing:

I should think it will be fairly easy for them to fill in those gaps as the records have been filmed and are available on microfiche.

Brilliant Zoe.

George James Peers seems to have been a very busy man. :d
May 1877 he was granted power to administer the estates of his late father & then his late mother. On 12 June 1877 he got leave to administer the estates of three deceased bachelor brothers of his mother (they'd died 1822, 1843 & 1850) Then on 10 Sep 1877 he was granted administration of the effects of yet another deceased brother of his late mother - another 1843 death. I see that when you add the National Probate Calendar to your "quick links" on ancestry it is listed as "England". Not very helpful! I wonder if there would be any point reporting it to ancestry?
|
Oh blow! I have the basic sub for Ancestry and last night was amazed that I could get access to the Probate Calendar, so did quite a lot of late night searching. Just tried it again, to do some more, and am getting the message that I need to upgrade to Premium in order to see the info. Glad I did the important ones yesterday.

Me too!
I was able to view the images this afternoon, but not anymore. Jay |
I've only found one of my direct line so far on there, have sent for his will. I bet there will be a long long wait, they will be inundated. Hope they've been pre-warned.
