Thomas Phillips - a man about whom very little is known
Thomas Phillips, ostler, is on the marriage cert of his daughter Rachel, who married Evan Jones at Aberdare in 1854.
Rachel on censuses gives her birth as between 1829-1832 and birthplace as Swansea or Morriston, Glamorgan. I haven't been able to find a definite baptism for Rachel or conclusively find her before her marriage, so have no further clues about Thomas.

I've found a Thomas Phillip in 1841 whose occupation I think is Hostler - what do you think? I'll try to post up a link:
ancestry 1841 Cwmgelly Cottages, Llangefelach, Glamorgan Thomas Phillip 35 Hostler N Mary Do 40 Y David Do 15 Collier N Rachel Do 13 Y William Do 12 Hoslier Y John Do 10 Do Y Susannah Do 7 Y Thomas Do 5 Y Maria Do 3 Y There is a likely for Rachel in 1851 as a servant in Aberdare, but I'll see if I can find this Thomas and the rest of his family in 1851 to see if the occupation is clearer.

thank you for looking. I had an initial look for this chap but got disheartened as I don't have a wife's name to help decide I've found the right chap. Of course he might be listed as a groom or something similar in a census or he could be a figment of Rachel's imagination. But you've inspired me to take another go at tracking him down. Perhaps when familysearch finally get digitised images of Welsh baptisms I'll be able to pin him down. Cheers.

Oh and I have the 1851 Rachel in Aberdare as the likeliest right one, but of course it doesn't get us nearer finding either of her parents!

Do you think that occupation in 1841 is Hostler, though?

I think that it looks like William's "hoslier" but I can't think what its meant to be. Perhaps hostler, but it does look as though it ends "ier". Haulier?

I forgot to ask before, who were the witnesses at Rachel's wedding?

Hi KiteRunner
That's not much help, I think - Ann Rees (who signed) and Ann McCormick (who made her mark). I had a look for them a while ago and found the second lady: 1851 Gadlys, Aberdare Thomas McComic abt 1801 Ireland Head stable keeper Ann McComic abt 1801 Ireland Wife 1861 RG9/4055 Folio: 75 Page: 10 Merthyr Tydfil Workhouse Thomas McCormick 60 hawker Ireland Ann McCormick Age: 59 abt 1802 In Door Pauper born: Ireland but not the first - I guess there are fewer McCormicks than Rees in Wales! I assumed they were Rachel's bridesmaids, but Ann McC would be a bit old for that and as she was born in Ireland she can't be Rachel's remarried Mum or an aunt!
