Been out - so the Gretna marriage of Edward Sancton to Sarah Bell is a red herring?

I'm hoping also to find his entry into Australia if he was assisted. Ofcourse if he paid his own way that will not be so easy. Sancton's marriage cert will give more details but that will possibly take a month!!.
The first time I have found him in NSW is when he marries in 1882 at Coonabarbran, (out west) so possibly he came as a jackaroo because the lady he married was part of the squatocracy. The indexers had trouble with his name too, he is named Laveton for his marriage and for daughters' births he is named Saneton x 2, then Saucton and the final 2 Sancton. Many thanks again. Julie |

On Ancestry, Sancton Bell, unassisted passenger, arrived Port Jackson, NSW, 25 January 1856, on the Joshua.

Thanks Shona .. I wonder if that date is right, as he would only have been 5 .. Unless all the family come out?

Just looking at the image (on the phone, so diff to read).
Yes, the whole family are listed. Edward and Mary Ann and a whole tribe of kiddies. No ages for any of the children, but this is the order they are listed in, which I guess is age order: Sarah Agenona ? Annie John Louis ? Thomas Sancton Alice Maria |

The cabin passengers are shown on two different pages on Ancestry, and the two lists for the Bell family are different (more names on the first page).
It's very hard to read on Ancestry, but there's a better scan here: http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1...ame=082jos.gif The list reads: Edw'd Bell M. Ann Zara? Ayesha? Annie Charles John? Louisa Thomas Sancton Alice Maria Mary Eliza Last edited by Mary from Italy; 03-03-13 at 23:23. |

Been doing a bit of Googling. Quite a few hits for Edward Bell who was Sydney's City Engineer from tbe 1850s. He was big in drainage and sewerage.
