GRO Certificates
Last day at old price.
Now can someone tell me? I have one with 6 possibilities with a death 1841-1851 so am going to order all 6 in the hope I get the right one. If I order today will they still refund the £4 of the ones that are wrong? |

I don't know the answer to your Q, but wondered if we can manage to eliminate any of these six possibles? Do you know where 'your' death should have taken place? (I presume it's somewhere where the local reg office won't help?)

If you ask them to check each reference against a piece of information that you know to be correct (eg residence at the time of death), they'll charge £7 for the one that actually send and £3 for each extra reference checked - so you'll pay £22 at most, less if they find the right one without having to check all the others first. At least, that's how it worked when I had three possible registrations for a birth (all in the same district, year and quarter - it was a common name!)

Can you post the details and we could look on the NBI to try and eliminate some of them?
I am going out shortly, so won't be able to look until I come home but someone else might be able to do it for you. Tom |

Sometimes you can work out which sub district the various death registers were held in.

Unfortunately I don't know where John Milner a leather currier died -
In 1841 census he was living in Morley Halifax Yorks (HO107; Piece 1300; Folio: 47; Page: 4; Line: 23 In 1851 his widow Lydia/Lidia was living at Bolton Rd Bradford. HO107; Piece: 2307; Folio: 510; Page: 22; Think the age is out as in 1841 both are age 30 but in 1851 Lidia is 48 and subsequent census and age of death agree with 1851. He could have lived anywhere in the 10 year period so am initially concentrating on Bradford. These are the ones Mar 1843 Bradford 23 92 Dec 1843 Bradford 23 144 Dec 1844 Bradford 23 67 Sep 1845 Bradford 23 111 Jun 1847 Bradford 23 140 Jun 1848 Bradford 23 142 My question is after tomorrow will the GRO make a refund if its incorrect like they do now or not? I would have thought they ought to, because the new rule that they're not accepting checking points only comes into force tomorrow as I understand it. However, I would have thought you could save money by contacting the Bradford Register Office instead of the GRO. Their prices also go up tomorrow, but local ROs are much more flexible than the GRO, and don't normally charge for checking points. They're usually helpful if you phone them. |

I've checked the Calverley PR site, because a lot of my East Bradford people are registered there, but I can't find him. http://www.calverley.info/ |

Still can't answer the Q, but this one:
Mar 1843 Bradford 23 92 probably belongs to the 7 month old son of John Milner, draper of Bradford (Bradford Observer) who died 14th Mar 1843.
