In 1861 William Owens says he was b in Whitford, Flintshire in about 1830. I've just looked at the 1841 census for Wales and there are six William Owens living in the Whitford area within a year or two of that birth year, so it's very likely you will need the marriage cert to sort out which one he is (if he is any of those!).
Looking at the 1851 census (for Wales - I've not looked at England) there is one William b Whitford with father Humphrey, which was the name of one of William's children, and there is also another who is away from his family and a cowman, which might also be him, or one of the (several) others!

Wow Thanks everyone!
i didn't expect so much information so soon! My mistake about the ages of John and George, it was late when i was typing it. ooops! Thanks for the link to the Chester parish records, i am i right in thinking that G-F FNAME means Grooms fathers forname? if so it is John so this is great as it gives me his name. i found it strange that William Owens was not on the 1871 census but was on the 1881 census, but as i have been told on past searches this doesn't mean much just he was not there on the night of the census, so i did a search on William Owens - Visitor - and found someone same name age in Holywell, Flintshire, which i suppose would fit in with the fact that he came from Wales, i just need to get more credits to see if it is the same person! On the 1861 census does it give the address of the Owens family ? the fact that Elenor was from Wales doesn't surprise me as William was also Welsh. does it say in this census where in Wales she was from? Thanks so much for your help with this! Alison |

Off the top of my head, Eleanor was from Mold, Flintshire. The address was on the 1861 census, but I don't have time to get the page up again now as visitors have just arrived!

Yes, I think so - if you click on Glossary, there should be a list of abbreviations. I'm not very familiar with that site myself, and I know it's hard to navigate.
