Singapore and Malaya newspapers (1831-2006)
Singapore and Malaya newspapers (1831-2006) are online at:
http://newspapers.nl.sg/ I think this site may have been mentioned before, but it's improved enormously since I last looked at it. Previously, they just had snippets from OCR'd newspapers, whereas now you can view the image of the original article. I've found loads of stuff about my rubber-planting family there. The coverage page shows which papers have been digitised: http://newspapers.nl.sg/FAQ.aspx |

I found one awful cutting, though - one of my planters was prosecuted for beating one of his coolies, who later died. The court ruled that he died of unrelated causes, and my man was just fined, but it's not the kind of relative you can be very proud of.

Thanks for the tip Mary, I found one of mine who got married there - and numerous golf, hockey, cricket, rugby & shooting reports, goodness know how he squeezed working in with all that sport!

Great source of information, there are so many articles on one particular distant cousin of mine I can almost follow his daily footsteps around the world over several years, don't think I will though.
Also found one cousin who accepted bribes whilst Chairman of a council committee. Last edited by WakefieldWomble; 27-11-11 at 10:12. |
