Helen Wishart Johnston
This is my great-great-aunt and she has always confused me!
She was born c. 1853 and the censuses say in Aberdeen. Her younger siblings were born in Kincardineshire, either Banchory Devenick or Fetteresso. This is before civil registration in Scotland and I can't find her birth/baptism. Her parents should be James Johnston and his wife Catherine Wishart. 1861 Census Berryhill, Carpenter House James Johnston Head Married 35 House Carpenter Born Kincardineshire Cookney Catherine wife Married 35 born Fetteresso Helen daughter 8 scholar born Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen Catherine daughter 6 born Kincardineshire, Banchory Dev. Mary daughter 4 born Kincardineshire, Banchory Dev James son 1 born Kincardineshire, Cookney This is possibly her in 1871: 1871 Census 6 Affleck Street Old Machar Aberdeen Jane Peter Head W 65 Clergyman’s Widow Aberdeen Old Machar Fanny Daur Unm 23 Aberdeen Leslie George W. Son Unm 16 Clerk Aberdeen Leslie Helen Johnston Servant Unm 18 General Servant Aberdeen Old Machar She married William Summers on 11th December 1875 at St Nicholas, Aberdeen. However, the marriage certificate different parents: William Summers Seaman (M.S)(Bachelor) aged 23 of 3 Hanover Street Aberdeen Father William Summers Mason (Journeyman) (Deceased) Mother Jane Summers M.S. Rennie?? married Helen Johnston (Spinster) aged 23 of 95 West North Street Aberdeen Father George Johnston House Carpenter (Journeyman) Mother Helen Johnston M.S. Smith Witnesses James Summers and William Fettes Her father James was a carpenter but the mother is wrong. NB. There is a family in Aberdeen with father George Johnston, mother Helen and daughter Helen of the same age as our Helen. HOWEVER, this Helen Johnston is still a spinster and at home with the above parents on the 1881 census, when Helen and William were married. George Johnston WAS NOT a House Carpenter, he was a Saw Miller. I kept thinking this wasn't her but two of her Summers children are with their grandparents on censuses: 1891 Census Bridge of Muchalls Cookney Fetteresso James Johnston Head Mar 65 Carpenter Kincardineshire Fetteresso Catherine Wife Mar 65 Carpenter’s Wife Kincardineshire Fetteresso William Summers Grandson 13 Scholar Aberdeenshire St Nicholas 1901 Census Bridge of Muchalls Fetteresso Cookney James Johnston Head Mar 76 Retired Carpenter Kincardineshire Fetteresso 3 windows Catherine Johnston Wife Mar 76 Kincardineshire Fetteresso Minnie Summers Grand Daur 10 Scholar Aberdeenshire St Nicholas |

Have you found 95 West North Street, Aberdeen, on the censuses to see who was there?

Wonder if she was actually a niece to James and Catherine and was in effect an adopted daughter.
She continued this until her parents died and she remarried and reverted back to her birth parents.

She also had an illegitimate son after William Summers was drowned.
Alexander David Murray Johnston or Summers born 25th November 1892 52 Charles Street, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire This confirms William Summers drowned. |

Just in case it helps, FamilySearch has a birth in Old Machar, Aberdeen, in 1856, for Helen Smith daughter of James Smith and Helen Smith.
Can't find it on ScotlandsPeople, but I'm not very familiar with that site. |

Found it now, it's in the statutory registers. I didn't realise they started so early.
I don't have any SP credits at present, so I can't check it out. |

I hadn't thought of that, however there is no George Johnston in the Johnston family at that stage. I'll keep an open mind, though.

Thanks, Mary. It probably isn't her as she was 8 in 1861, so born c. 1853. She had a younger sister Catherine born c. 1855 and then a second sister Mary born 1st October 1856 at Banchory Devenick.
