Default Army records

Merry has found me some information about an ancestor:

Quote:
Scope and content WILLIAM POWELL
Born NEW RADNOR, Radnorshire
Served in 37th Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 42
Covering dates 1812-1834
Held by The National Archives, Kew

Legal status Public Record(s)
Language English
Now what do I do?

I am quite happy with PRs, IGI, BMD, census & wills but I have never asked for army records. Could sks give me a clue as to how to go about getting the records. And if possible tell me how/where Merry got the above information.
I've just spent an hour on TNA (which I'm not familiar with) and got absolutely nowhere.

If you go into the military records bit of findmypast and search British Army Service Records 1760-1913 for William Powell born Wales, Radnorshire, the first match that comes up is one born 1792 Radnor, Radnorshire. Is that the right date for your William?

Yes, that'll be him Kate. Thanks.
I'm not familiar with Findmypast either. Will that info come up without a sub?

And is there more to be found? I mean, is it like a will? - you find the listing and then send off for the document(s)? - if so where to?

Yes, I found it without a sub. Then you just need some credits to view the papers. You don't have to send off for it, just buy your credits and click on the view button.

Oh dear. I found it on my Windows ME computer running Internet Explorer 6 so I would have thought it was o.k.! What browser are you using, and can you try a different one?

If and when you get onto it, by the way, don't bother with the transcription for 5 credits, just view the original image, assuming you're reasonably sure it's the right person. The transcriptions only have a little bit of the info.
