It was probably from a contact at the beginning of my research... or a misreading of Joseph...

I think the L needs to disappear :)

I just received his marriage certs and death cert.

They helped me to be more sure that I'm following the right person.

It niggled me that he was variously a tanner/leather worker/accountant/grocer/schoolteacher...

His dad was a teacher, Joseph became a teacher.
His first wife's father was a teacher too.

His second wife's father was a saddler... (leather industry)

I'm guessing that he was always a teacher but that it didn't pay much so he had a more lucrative job too???

Does anyone know about teachers' salaries at the end of the 19th
century??
