William Hatch MFFMFFF

This one is work in progress and needs some unravelling.

Name - "official" name and what they were known as
William Hatch

Date and place of birth
I thought he would be born at Bramshaw but haven't found a baptism there yet, but there seem to be omissions from the Baptism Index produced by the Hampshire Genealogical Society.

However, William's father was from Southwick when he married and there are baptisms for children of a Wiliam Hatch there (see below).

Names of parents
William Hatch and Mary (née Budd)

Date and place of baptism
There are these two baptisms at Southwick, but no father's name given.
The 1717 one is too late but 1710 would tie in with William being marrying in 1731.

20 July 1710 William Hatch (father blank)
19 May 1717 William son of (blank) Hatch

FMP has burials for Southwick going back to 1678 and no Williams buried until the 1740s.

Details of each of his or her marriages

Probably the children of William and Christian:

I'm not sure if John and Stephen are Christian's children.

This may put the cat amongst the pigeons!

The Wiltshire Marriages database on ancestry gives his name as William Hatch sr on the marriage to Christian, though it doesn't have images for us to check this. But if that's correct, then the William who married Christian wouldn't be the one born in 1710, but his father!

(the Wiltshire Marriages database was not transcribed by ancestry but acquired by them and looks to be quite accurate so I would think it is probably right.)

But a lot of public trees on ancestry show William Hatch senior (i.e. the one married to Mary Budd) dying in 1754. They do have Mary dying in 1728 which would fit with William remarrying in 1731, though. Hmmm...

This part of the tree has always been fraught with problems, Kate.

I have just ordered ther Hampshire Baptism Index 1660 - 1751 on CD, so I'm hoping some of my questions may be answered.

I saw the "senior" part too. I'm on an information-collecting exercise at present, so we'll see how it pans out.

I have the will of the William Hatch who died in 1754. He mentions:

my Loving Wife Sarah
my Five Children and two Grandchildren William Hatch John Hatch Mary the wife of Richard New Martha the Wife of Edward Rookes Honour the Wife of Henry Witorn and James and Ann Hatch my Grandchildren

I should mention I've got a big PDF file of the Hatch family of 225 pages that goes back to Nicholas Hatch of Great Bursted, Essex born c. 1595. It will be identical to the information on one of the Ancestry trees.

It has some omissions and errors, I've found, but still very useful.

The will of William Hatch of 1754:
James and Ann Hatch my Grandchildren

William Hatch son had a James and an Ann.
His brother John didn't.

So the William who died c. 1754 was the father of the William here.

Edit:
We now know that the two grandchildren were the children of William's son James who died in 1752.

When was the will of 1754 actually made? I would have expected Christian to have completed her family by 1754. No reason why all grandchildren should be mentioned but any James must have died prior to 1767.

FMP has MIs for Bramshaw but no details of dates or anything.
I've contacted the Wiltshire Family History Society for more information.

Hampshire FHS also has a fiche with them - I've also contacted them.

I've found the parents of the James and Ann here.
William Hatch's widow Sarah made a will.
She was the second wife.
"Also I give unto James Hatch and Anne Hatch Son and Daughter of James Hatch deceased The Sum of one Shilling each"

She refers to her husband's children as her "sons in law" or "daughters in law".
