Jabez Dando a black sheep?

I have just found a marriage for one of my grandmother's great aunts Maria Cox to George Dando 27 Feb 1833 St. Mary Redcliffe Bristol. I have found several children for this couple including Jabez born 1838 Clutton Somerset. Ancestry are suggesting entries in New South Wales Prisoner index and New South Wales Coroner report but I don't have a world wide sub to read them.
Can any one see if its my man and what he has been up to.

I certain can see this man as there is a photo of him!

Do you want me to email you the image Anne?

anne fraser 20-02-11 19:10

Yes please. I wonder if anyone can check if it is my chap from Somerset.

JayG 20-02-11 19:13

PM received.

Forgot to say it does give his birthplace as Somerset!

You can read about his trial and death here:

Thanks Mary. If it is my man I certainly never heard the story.
Box bush cottage Stanton Drew 1891 census
Household Members: Name Age
Edwin W Cox 52
Mary B Cox 49
Sarah A Cox 15
William E Cox 13
Ernest E Cox 1
Mable G Cox 3
Maria Dando 83

Mabel was my grandmother and Maria Dando is said to be Edwin's aunt. I am hoping to prove she was also Jabez mother. I thought you could get parent's names from an Australian death. Certainly quite a story for the family tree if true.

Incidently it solves this one as well. http://genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum...t=stanton+drew
It was George and Mary 1798

Australian death certs, and the death index, usually show the parents' names, but only if they were known to the informant, obviously.

In Jabez's case, the names aren't shown in the index.

His parents' names should be shown on his marriage certs. It looked as though he married once in Victoria (to the lady who married him bigamously, as some of the cuttings say) and once in NSW.

Was it a good photo?

anne fraser 21-02-11 16:09

Yes Jay G sent me his jail record. It says he was 5ft 6 in with brown hair and hazel eyes. I am sorry I can't get the picture to copy. It says he was born in Somerset in 1838 which fits and that he was a blacksmith which would be the same as his father. It also said he arrived in Australia in 1853 on board the Mary Seton.
