I have just received some wonderful research from Kevin Asplin, the Military Researcher, who went through the Military Musters tracking John McCrohon born 1795 at Limerick. John Jnr. enlisted at Cueta in 1810 as a Boy soldier and when he enlisted, he was his father, Private John McCrohon, who had already served 14+ years. In 1813 the 4th Foot returned from the Continent to Portsmouth and John McCrohon Senior is recorded as dying at Hilsea on 13 April 1813. I'm wondering if anyone would know if there would be a parish record of his burial and where he would be buried?

Hilsea Barracks is at Portsmouth if that's any help.

hILLSEA IS Wymering - no info on Genuki. In theory, burial ought to be on FMP - only I can't!

I thought of the Royal Garrison Church, but that doesn't appear to have any burial records for the period. Try http://www.portsmouthrecordsoffice.co.uk/ to ask where the records might be. Unfortunately, it looks as if they are in the middle of a move from Museum Road to the library, so may not reply quickly.

Julie I put Hilsea 1813 into Google Books and quite afew hits come up. It will probably be enough to get a feel for the time and place.

ROYAL GARRISON CHURCH SOUTHSEA records on the Knights' Hampshire site show deaths to 1778 and then skip to 1814. Wouldn't you know it? I scanned all of the BMD for Portsmouth, Portsea etc for the McCrohon name and found no records.
Wymering stops at 1812.

Kevin Asplin says that there were a lot of deaths at that time and he was probably buried in a mass unmarked grave. Very sad. Kevin has sent me a CD and says that there is more about John Senior on it... I'll be haunting the postie until it arrives poor man .... Where is it? Why isn't it here? ......
