Is there anyone in Manitoba (well Canada for that matter) who has access to birth cert information and perhaps Census.

I have an Archibald Livingstone Lindsay, supposedly born 5 April 1910 - his parents names were George & Janet/Janette Lindsay. Archie had two sisters (not confirmed) - Iointhe & Natalie and one other. Maybe that could be Iolanthe?

We did find out that Archies father George was a Mounted Policeman. There is apparently one Mounted Policeman George with a different wife, and the family deny that our George in any way related.

I think the 1911 Canadian census is free, Jood, just off to check...

Here's the link:

Just seeing if I can spot them...

Can't see them on there, nor on the 1911 Canadian census on ancestry, nor in the 1916 Canadian census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta which is also on ancestry.

Thank you. Its terrible I cant get past a grandfather! We believe Archie may have been illigitemate, and I wondered if perhaps his mother was Janet Livingstone. I know nothing about Canadian family history.

I appreciate any help I can get. I understand George himself came from Scotland originally, but Archie does claim to be from Canada on his marriage certificate

I looked for any Archibalds born about the right time and didn't spot him under the surname Livingstone either.

How would I go about finding a birth in that area, or finding out about the mounted police?

You could try emailing the Manitoba Genealogical Society for advice/assistance: http://www.mbgenealogy.com/. From their website it seems they have cemetery transcriptions for Flin Flon and could point you in the right direction for further research.

You could also try the Manitoba Archives:
http://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/research.html

My family history group was discussing Manitoba research at our last get together and although I haven't checked this site as my ancestors are all English, I'm told that it's a good one. I'm not sure if it will help you at all though as the newspapers (with obituaries) seem to be too recent: http://manitobia.ca/cocoon/launch/en/project

Thanks so much Jenny.

Will have a look up.

From Canada I move to Italy - well, Crete - Suda in particular - to a Lindsay House I am trying to find links with, as we have a photo of some of our Lindsays standing outside Lindsay House. (around 1926) - Im told it is a very derelict old building now. Wonder if anyone has heard of it or been there.

Jood, I Googled "Manitoba births" and found a wealth of resources, including:

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Entitled.html

http://www.afhs.ab.ca/registry/regmb_birth.html

http://censuslinks.com/Canada/Manitoba.html

http://globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazfd/gazfd71c.htm

http://www.telusplanet.net/public/mtoll/manitoba.htm

http://www.vitalcertificates.ca/manitoba/birth-certificate/

Jenny's suggestions sound better focused than mine, but these look at least potentially interesting.

Thanks Janet, will delve into those sites shortly - I'm always fazed with anything american or canadian lol

Keep your fingers crossed for me

I will, Jood. There's got to be some answers out there somewhere, don't you think? :)

Yes, terrible not to get even past a grandfather :(
But we saw a reference to Lindsay house in Crete, and its revived our interest again - as there is some connection somewhere.
The only Mounted Policeman there in those years had a different wife, and the grandchildren say there is no way he would have had a child out of wedlock. *yawns* lol
What proof do we have?? :(

Just thinking, it could be that they were on holiday there and came across the house and wanted their picture taken outside it just because of the coincidence of the name? But of course there may turn out to be a connection.

I did think of that Kite - I just wondered if Canadians used Crete as a holiday spot in the 1920's?

I don't know, Jood.

I had a look on that Manitoba BMD site and couldn't see Archibald's birth on there, though it only goes up to 1911 so if he was a couple of years younger than he claimed, he could still turn up on there one day. Do you know if the sisters were older or younger than him?

No I dont Kite - my mother in law wouldnt dare ask her husband too many questions, as he'd jumped ship to arrive in Australia and was always wary about things.

Never knew what happened to the three sisters - they certainly didnt come to Australia.

Are the sisters in the Crete photo? If so, can you tell if they look older or younger than Archibald?

I'll have to wait a while Kite - my daughter has the pics - I've just emailed her to send them to me.

Just in case it helps with your searches, Crete is part of Greece, not Italy :)

*smiling broadly * ooops Mary - thanks for that! I was thinking Italy - and heaven knows why!

I'll have to put this on hold for a while - we seem to have established a link to Lindsay House at last. I have to type up some sort of tree with the information I've found, and sort of link it to ours. Many thanks for your help. I may ask further questions later.

Let us know what you've found out when you've typed it up, won't you, Jood?

Yes I will Kite - Im still reading through 62 pages - and although it is positively ours, I can't find the link as yet.
