Oooh, I looked at this thread when adding David's mother to ToG4 and made the effort to check the Death Duty Registers on FMP and.....

1821 County Court Wills, David Maynard, Exor John Arnold of Whittlesford, Cambs, Consistory Court of Ely, Register 4, Folio 1050.

So, I shall be sending off for that!

Out of interest, who did you e-mail, Merry?

The Consistory Court of Ely probate records are at Cambridgeshire Archives.

I hope you don't have to wait long for a reply, Merry.

The problem with pre-1858 wills is knowing who to contact. Luckily I have have quite a few on TNA, and recently I have ordered from Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, and just this week from Lancashire Archives.

That's very reasonable, Merry. I hope they come very soon.

Yes, I thought that was very reasonable too.

I don't expect anything dramatic to come from this will, but I suppose there's always a chance of something unexpected and certainly only one way to find out!

I was just looking at that gravestone photo again and noticed (surely not for the first time????) that David Maynard died 180 years to the day before my daughter was born! I must be losing my marbles as I have no recollection of noticing that before!

Well the good news is I now have four pages of DM's handwriting and enjoyed his spelling very much! Also his request for a funeral, "with as little parade and expence (sic) as decency will allow"

It's a good job I didn't need the will to prove any relationships though, as all he manages is to say he has a living wife and living children who are aged under 21. That's it. His farm and shop were worth £400.

There was one thing I've not seen on any other will though - that should his wife choose to remarry he would then give her £50  She never did!
