One of my relatives worked for the St John Ambulance Association in 1916 and 1917 - I found her medal - it looks like this, but with two bars attached showing the years of service.

Does anyone have any idea of what her work would have involved please? I believe she was living in Altrincham at the time.

I see that there is a St John Ambulance museum in London, but it is closed until August

Its the usual St John ambulance medal, do the bars have dates? have you got a picture? they are likely to be the bars that state the date of re examination
Says that to hold the medal does not state they were members of SJA they could have taken a course in first aid for work or VAD war service

Possibly should have name engraved on back with registration no and words issued in clerkenwell or registered at St John Gate.

Unlikely to records in the archives unless issued before 1885

There are some faq sheets here http://www.museumstjohn.org.uk/faq/index.html

Peppie, many, many thanks for that :)

From your link, I think it is the 4th issue re-examination medal. The bars have dates 1916 and 1917 on. The recipient's name and the registration number are on the back.

Hope this makes sense! Am going back to bed now! :d

When I took my St John's Ambulance test I didn't get a medal! Just a little card valid for 3 years. *sulks*
