Born abt 1781 at Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire.
Baptism not found, but evidence strongly suggests William's parents were Sylvester Emms [William is informant on Sylvester's death cert] and Mary Emms nee Maxwell.

Married Jane Harding 03 Oct 1816 at Yanworth, Gloucestershire.

1830 mentioned in quarter sessions - don't yet have details.

1838 registered death of Sylvester Emms at Donnington, Gloucestershire.

1841 recorded as William Hemms, 60, labourer with wife and children Jane, Mary, John, Maria and Elizabeth at Chedworth, Gloucestershire.

1853 Tithe map of Chedworth records William Emins renting a house and garden from James Ballinger.

1851 William Hemms, 73, labourer with wife and daughter Elizabeth in Chedworth.

1861 William Emms, age 82, and wife Jane are lodging with their daughter Elizabeth, her husband John Purvey and grandchildren William, Edna Jane & Ann.

May 1861 William's wife Jane died at Chedworth.

Death: 12 March 1867, aged 90 at Union Workhouse, Eastington, Gloucestershire of natural decay.

Burial - not found yet.

Nell, I looked up the details of his misdemeanour at Gloucester Record Office for you:

Prisoners Names: William Emms
Age: 49
Parish: Chedworth
By whom committed: H E Waller Esq, E Pitt Clerk, Wm Price Clerk

Remarks: Charged on the oath of Daniel Glover with having on the night of Saturday the second day of January instant at the parish of Chedworth unlawfully entered into a certain wood in Chedworth aforesaid called Wheatley wood and stolen and carried away a quantity of poles and underwood the property of The Right Honarble [stet] Lord Stowell.

Marks Stature etc: Dark hair bald on his forehead light brown eyes long face pecked chin dark eye brows a scar on right eye brow four small moles rh side his face wide mouth a scar rh side a mole on rh arm sevl moles on his left arm a scar little finger rh hand sevl moles about his shoulders read [ie can read] round should’d. Labourer. Heighth [stet] 5ft 3 and half ins.

When tried/result of trial: Epiphany Sefsions January 12 1830. Three cal’r months in the Penitentiary. See Penitentiary register [does not survive]

When discharged: 15th Janry 1830.
Conduct: Orderly
Remarks: Has been in the waggon train.

Thanks Sabrina! I hadn't seen the settlement examination! I know that William Harding, who was charged with him, was his eldest son, by his wife Jane Harding, before they married.

OK, the Settlement Examination reads as follows:

Chedworth
8 Jan 1822
William Emms, Labourer, born in Bourton on the Water and about 19 year ago hired for a year in Stowell by John Hambedge, farmer deceased.

I don't know. His son-in-law John Purvey did join the army, briefly, but was invalided out when he lost the sight of one eye through infection, and became a Chelsea pensioner.

I wondered what this meant and thought it might mean that he was in the Royal Waggon Train, previously known at the Royal Waggon Corps.
