I've been asked by an American relative if there are any Irish census available online and to be honest, not having any Irish research to do I have no idea. Before I tell her I don't know, I thought I'd ask here:)

Yes, that's more or less it really as the earlier ones haven't survived except for a very few little bits. There are some bits and bobs on this link:

And there are some fragments that have survived if you google and have Irish luck :)
And there is the Griffiths Valuation that is worth exploring - http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php

Thanks everyone I knew Irish research was not easy from what others had said. I'm pleased it's not my family line :)

We once thought that OH had Irish ancestors. We now know we got it all wrong. We don't have a clue who his grandfathers parents were now but probably we don't need Irish research. The one's we thought they were were Irish Catholic and in the UK in 1851. NOT EASY.

Take pity on those of us who do (have Irish ancestors) - 3 of my father's 4 grandparents were born in Ireland. One set married there and had a child before emigrating. The fourth was the son of an emigrant. Thank God for the (report EVERY event) English ancestors on my mother's side!

Dave my late husband's grandfather was from Sligo and grandmother from Limerick - we lost the family for 30 years - 2009 I found living relies in Sligo - the nicest people - I've since been back and family out here twice. Now with the help of GF I've traced his grandmother, have news of relies in NZ and hope to find more when I next get to Ireland. It was worth the wait.. but ..... you need lots of patience and persistence...

Julie -

Just found a marriage record for (I believe) GGGrandad who would be from Ardgroom (listed as "Agroom" but as it was Eyeries parish Ardgroom is the best bet). We'll be there next month looking for relies. Can't be too many McCarthys in west Cork, can there? :)
