oo I think I've found her christening:

Maria Frances Spanton 11/07/1830 St Gregory, Norwich to Humphrey Spanton and Maria Betson.

hmmm- a lack of 'Francis' in her father's name though

I think Martha must be a mistranscription Elizabeth.

Francis Humphrey married at least twice. Maria Frances' mother was Maria, but she died in 1846 with a possible 6 living children. He married Marianne Moxon (née Spicer) in 1848.
The youngest son, Alfred, named one of his daughter's after Marianne. His family emigrated to Canada.

You've brought back loads of memories for me with this thread, Sarah! Absolutely no help with your research but my Grandma, b 1890 in Bethnal Green, used to visit a "Mrs Spanton" in Norfolk every year. Mrs Spanton always sent me presents for birthdays and Christmas but I have absolutely no idea who she was or how Grandma knew her. I don't suppose I'll ever know now :)

Apologies for interrupting yor thread - normal service will now continue :d
