Julie had an idea and I can't find any records so maybe someone with FMP can have a look at the military records. I think they are more extensive than Ancestry.
Looking to see if there is a James Benham C1800 - 1826 in any regiment. Maybe the 4th Foot Kings Own Lancaster or another regiment that served in the Caribbean 1819-1826. Any info is welcome.

You don't need a sub to search on there! There are 6 James Benhams, one born 1784 Glasgow, one born 1813 Wallingford (probably no use to you), two born 1868 who won't be any use to you, and one born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire but it doesn't give his year of birth on the index, the other one no details given. You can buy pay-per-view credits to look at them.

Oh, and if you search in Other Army Lists / Roll Calls, it comes up with an entry in the Peninsula Medal Roll 1793-1814, regiment 94th Foot.

Thanks. I have gotten lost on that site in the past. I will give it another try.

Well, I must be a complete idiot but I can find no records except a couple of marriages and births. I guess I am doing something fundamentally wrong. Sigh!

As I am having no luck on FMP are there any other sites I could try? Any straws I can grasp?

Go to findmypast:
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/welcome.jsp?_zga_s=1

Click on the "military" tab then choose British Army Service Records 1760-1913 and click on the "Search" button next to that, and when the search screen comes up, put in James for first name and Benham for last name, leaving the "include variants" box ticked for first name, then click on "Search" and the 6 results should come up. Then when you've finished with those, if you go back to the list of military databases, you can choose Other army lists roll calls 1656-1888 and do the same. Shout if you still can't find it!

The Peninsula Medal Roll is also on Family Relatives but they don't seem to have indexed James Benham on there, and I wouldn't bother with that site if I were you.
