welcome to the site, biz.

How do you know the birth certs are for the same person?

Do you have the details of her parents?

How do you know that is your Mary Hughes in the prison?

In 1881 there are three Mary Hughes b about the right time in Normanton! (and no doubt several in Ireland too).

Do you have Mary's marriage certificate? Could you give us the details from that please?

How come you can only say she was born 1878/79 if you have two birth certs for her for the same (exact??) date?

The Irish birth cert index for 1878/79 is available on the IGI but I don't see an entry for your Mary Hughes.

I have just been reading this Rootschat thread:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=509759.0

Things I don't understand:

If Mary died in 1945, how come you mention her place of birth and maiden name are recorded on her death cert, as that information was not required at that date.

Why would you think the child born at Normanton was her at all, given you think she was born in Ireland and she had a raft of first names which don't appear on any birth reg in Wakefield (for Normanton) in the name Hughes?

If Mary's death cert has her name as Mary Cristina Philomina Walker how come the index entry only has one middle initial? (made me wonder if I have the right one - 1945 Q4)

Can you please let us know what children Mary and her husband had (as long as they are not still living). You said you couldn't find her in 1911 and that her husband ws in the army, but if we knew if she had any chldren particularly between 1908 and 1911 the that might help determine her whereabouts.

I must have missed out part of that Rootschat thread when I read it the first time!

Mary is on the 1911 census with her husband and eldest child. According to that, she was born about 1884 in Dublin Ireland, so she is not going to be the Mary Hughes b about five years earlier in Normanton and I am not sure how you can have two birth certs with the same date on them?

I don't see why she is likely to be the lady in prison in 1901 either.

Have you tried the 1901 Irish census?

If you have her Irish birth cert, who is her mother please?

You think her name is: Mary Cristina Philomina Walker nee Hughes

Her death reg shows Mary C Walker b about 1882

Her 1911 census entry suggests b about 1883/1884 in Dublin

So, I would think this is very likely to be her birth registration:

Name: Mary Christina Hughes
Registration District: Dublin South
Event Type: BIRTHS
Registration Quarter and Year: Apr - Jun 1883
Estimated Birth Year:
Age (at Death):
Mother's Maiden Name:
Film Number: 101059
Volume Number: 2
Page Number: 679
Digital Folder Number: 4193460
Image Number: 00145
Collection: Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958

Here is the 1911 census record for the family. Mary is recorded as aged 27 and her place of birth is Dublin, Ireland. They are living at the same address as is on their marriage certificate from 1908.
