I have just learned that my maternal grandmother was a suffragette, although nothing else is known, sadly.

Would there be a list of members, or subscribers, to this movement (or any other information that might help!) be on the 'net perhaps? I don't even know when Grandma would have been a member, or even if she was an active member. Totally in the dark, I'm afraid......

Many thanks,

Chris

I don't think there is an online list of members of the suffragette movement, but they have lots of information about suffragettes at the Women's Library in London:

It's worth searching theNational Archives site, which has quite a bit about suffragettes, including some of their letters:

I'm sure I found quite a detailed list of suffragettes on that site once, but I don't seem to have bookmarked it.

Chris,

Local newspapers also may have reported local 'incidents', so they may give you some background info even if nothing specific about your Grandma.

We found several reports about the suffragettes in our local area a couple of years ago when researching for the school centenary.

There's a list here, although it presumably only includes the most prominent campaigners:

Many thanks ladies - much appreciated!

I happened perchance to be talking to my Dad recently, and it was he that mentioned Grandma was a suffragette. Beyond that, he knows no more, I'm afraid. I don't think for one minute that she was actually a 'militant', but perhaps just became a member and voiced her opinion amongst her family. She was a lovely lady, but didn't suffer fools gladly and knew her own mind. Sadly I'm not able to jog my mother's memory these days, as she suffers from vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Oh, I wish I had known about Grandma being a suffragette many years before this, so I know that I am clutching straws...........

Many thanks again to all for their input - will check out the recommended sites you all gave.

Chris
