Good Morning,
I am writing from London, Ontario (Canada) and was told of your posting on the Archer family by a person that had seen it on this site.

Our grandmother was an Archer, Mary Agnes, born in Burton on the Trent in 1878. She had a sister, Rose, who was born in Poplar, London, England, in 1879. In the 1881 census of London both girls were in St. Vincent's Orphanage run by the Sisters of Charity. In 1882 they were on a ship from Liverpool to Quebec City with other children from Cardinal Mannings group. We know that Mary was adopted by a family in Ottawa in about 1886. The family of both girls are listed as Catholic.

We have been searching for five years now to find the name of the birth parents of our grandmother and her sister. There may have been more children in the family but these are the only two we know of that we can verify came to Canada.

I don't know if there might be a connection to your Archer family but would love to hear from you.

You can e-mail me at [email protected].

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Ann

Ann, Mary Agnes Archer's birth was registered Jan-Mar 1878 Burton district, so if you order a copy of her birth certificate it should give you her parents' names. Also there is baptism on FamilySearch: 3 Mar 1889 at Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire, date of birth 18 Jan 1878, parents Robert and Mary. Which doesn't quite fit if your Mary had emigrated by then? Are you sure that your Mary is the one born Burton on Trent?

Ann

As I posted in the James Archer thread. I have no evidence that 'my' Archers came to Burton on Trent. The fact that I am from Burton is a coincidence. They all seemed to be from Alcester, Warwickshire.

Many many people came to work in Burton for the breweries and the railways.

Ann, I have been looking at Mary and Rose on the 1881 census in the orphanage, and the birthplace for both girls is shown as London.
There is an Archer family at Hilton, Burton on Trent, Derbyshire on the 1881 census with head Robert, wife Mary, and children including Agnes M age 3, so it looks likely that she is the Mary Agnes Archer born in Burton on Trent in 1878, not your grandmother.

If you would like help tracing your grandmother, it would be best if you can start a new thread rather than continuing with it on Marg's threads as it looks unlikely that there is a connection between your family and hers. If you would like to do that, the link below will take you to the Research Questions board, and then just click on the "New Thread" button:

Thank you so much for the information on the Archer's.

I do believe you are right in that both Mary Agnes and Rose were born in London and that it is a different Mary Agnes that was born in Burton. That information was sent to me by another party some time ago.

I will start a new thread and I thank you very much for the information.
