Hello Lindsay

The county in 1841 is Middlesex (ie London) - Westminster was a district, now a borough.

I see it doesn't state bachelor or widower on the marriage entry. I should think it is likely he was married before, though?

Ah, thanks, Asa. Westminster and the City of London always confuse me for some reason.

Kite, I've not managed to find an earlier marriage for James, but it does seem unusual to marry for the first time at nearly 50.

I've discovered a marriage licence for James and Mary Ann which states that, as suspected, he was a widower.
